Identi.ca
« on: February 02, 2011, 12:51:12 AM »
I made an Identi.ca a while ago, but I never really got into it until recently, when I heard that the Debian squeeze release would be commentated on it. But before I go into any more detail, I will answer the question I know you're all dying to ask...

What the $@#!&%#@ is it?!

Identi.ca is a microblogging platform, similar to Twitter but popular among the free and open source software community because the software it runs on is open source. You post short messages that people can subscribe to, and you can subscribe to others.

What can I do with it?

You can communicate with it using the web interface, or else with instant messaging over XMPP (formerly Jabber) or via SMS. You can also link it to an existing Twitter account so that you don't miss out on anything said by your friends on Twitter, and they won't miss out on anything from you.

I've subscribed to it over XMPP, primarily to watch the Debian squeeze release commentary, but will also probably continue to use it in the future. It would be nice to have some friends from FES on there, so feel free to sign up! You can subscribe to me at https://identi.ca/parsifal when you do.

If I sign up will you stop using FES as your personal blog?
You have been ignored for common interest of mankind.

I might sign up, but only because I fucking hate Twitter. I found a facebook app for it, but I'm not sure if the app lets me post on identi.ca from facebook or post from identi.ca to facebook. I'd like the latter, though.

Here's an explanation for ya. Lurk moar. Every single point you brought up has been posted, reposted, debated and debunked. There is a search function on this forum, and it is very easy to use.

You "fucking hate" Twitter, but are willing to sign up to a service that is nearly identical to it?

Oh, irony.

I'm sorry, I should keep my opinions to myself or just not use any micro-blogging software at all. Silly me. Also, how is it "identicle" to Twitter? Identi.ca runs on free software, Twitter does not. That's a pretty big difference.

Hara is a little defensive of his baby, Twitter. I would consider signing up, but I doubt there would be anything of much interest to me there.

Twitter is boring. If there was ever a facebook-similar platform that was open source...now THAT would be exciting.

Twitter is a company. Other than that, they are virtually the same exact thing. What benefit does a layman user gain from using Identi.ca over Twitter? None. Except your classic "nerd-in-mom's-basement" e-erection from it running on free software.

You can link your Facebook account to your Identi.ca in much the same way you can link your XMPP or Twitter account. I just didn't mention it in the OP because Facebook is shit.
