Memberating
« on: January 09, 2011, 10:03:11 AM »
There has been disagreements lately about the precise definition of memberating. So that we do not have such disagreements in the future, I'd like to see a precise definition of memberating to be agreed upon.

For instance, I do not think that quoting rules, or suggesting that a post or thread has broken a rule or rules, should be considered memberating. No attempt is made to actually enforce those rules and it is up to a mod to decide if the rules were, in fact, broken.
How dare you have the audacity to demand my deposition. I've never even heard of you.

Why is it so hard for you to understand what memberating is?
I'm sorry. Am I to understand that when you have a boner you like to imagine punching the shit out of Tom Bishop? That's disgusting.

Because the term "membrating" is subjective and a bit vague.

I don't think it's vague and subjective, srsly.  If you are reading a thread and decide to tell someone they're breaking the rules, instead of posting on topic, then you are memberating.  I don't think memberating is that big of a deal, but I guess it does derail threads in the srs bsns forums.

But apparently telling someone that they're off topic is OK for some members, but not others.

It just seems like a victimless crime.

Well, I kind of agree with you, Horatio. I don't think it's such a big thing that a person should be banned for it, unless the person is doing it all the time and derailing threads into rules discussions.
I'm sorry. Am I to understand that when you have a boner you like to imagine punching the shit out of Tom Bishop? That's disgusting.

Eventually Levee is going to post a picture of a pyramid and a golden tyrannosaur painted on a Faberg? egg. When you ask what it's got to do with solar eclipses, and why he's derailing the thread, Snap! that's memberating fool!

I think the idea is the spirit of the law though. Memberabting the internetz crime is when you moderate for moderating sake, moderating very minor crimes, and acting like a mod. Obviously if someone writes something blatantly offensive, I don't think mods will yell at you for denouncing their statement, but if you get in the habit of writing "no x-ing in the upper fora", you will get b&

It would not be necessary if the mods were effective and actually followed the rules of the site themselves.

But the mods are unfortunately a) don't care enough to actively mod and/or b) are on the FE side. and before anybody brings up that mods are on both sides, and both sides troll, RE mods don't do anything really because this is an FE site, and RE'ers only troll trolls, which are inherently untrollable. That said, you have to just site here and n'joy the pain of injustice and hypocrisy.

When I posted a thread about the whole moonlight thing, it was trolled to death by FE'ers and then the mods shut it down because the considered it inane. its ok i guess for them to call it inane, but to shut down the thread is just mean for no reason, and I wasn't even trolling. that's why I left this place for a while for 4chan's /sci/.

It's necessary, though, until such time as rules are clarified.

Isn't telling someone to stop membrating a form of membrating?

Maybe, but that isn't what I was doing.  I was just pointing out that telling someone to stop membrating is a form of membrating.  That's a completely different form of membrating.

Tell you what, I'll give you three extra days.  When you finally tire of The Flat Earth Society and never return, feel free for three days following that day to continue reading and posting on the forums.  There, you have your three days back.  If that doesn't satisfy you, then I fear nothing will.

Memberrating... as silly of a term as "bendy light".

Both terms should be banned from this site.
