North or South
« on: December 28, 2010, 05:16:06 PM »

How about the conspiracy of all the NorthernPlanists attempting to create an UpperUtopia by forcing everyone in the SouthernPlanes to acknowledge that they less important because they live south of the equator therefore further away from the False Pole (which in reality is the rim) because Rowbotham could not fathom that South of the Equator the world works just as well without the need of Zetecism.  In reality the Rim is the Arctic and Antarctica is a discrete continent that sits in the middle of the planar world.

Berny
Eat that.

Quote from: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Reversed_map
In modern times, reversed maps are made as a learning device or to illustrate Northern Hemisphere bias. Different from simply turning a north-up map upside down, a reversed map has the text oriented to be read with south up. Uruguayan constructivist artist Joaqu?n Torres Garc?a created several works depicting a map of South America with the southern point at the top.
An example of the "north-up" convention in use is related to the famous "Blue Marble" photograph of the Earth, taken from on board Apollo 17. The image was originally oriented with the south pole at the top, with the island of Madagascar visible just left of center, and the continent of Africa at its right. However, the image was turned upside-down to fit the traditional view.

I have provided two Azimuthal equal area maps.  RET says they are both valid, as they are simply projections of the Round Earth, and the map is just an upside down version.  FET, they cannot be both valid - as the Pole is an actual fixed point, and the rim is the "edge".

The question is - can a FET actually prove that which map is a valid map?

Berny
This came up in another post but I think it has a major relevance.

However I can confirm by my own observations that the map on the right is more accurate based on the Great Lakes alone.

Lake Michigan and Huron aren't separate.
The Michigan Lake lobe also doesn't touch Lake Superior.

I agree. There's no point continuing it when people like Itchy don't get that a map where each pixel covers a distance of about 50 miles will have representational errors.

Well sometimes you try and address a problem - or two - and you get
Neither. Water is not checkered.

I have linked a better map - the other two maps were created by a java script program that allows for multiple projections http://www.btinternet.com/~se16/js/mapproj.htm and here is a wikimap Southpolar projection
with much more detail.  A further scaled map at http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/a/a1/Azimuthal_Equidistant_S90.jpg.

The first point I was trying to make was - Most of us are too used to seeing maps only in North as Up or center viewpoints.  In fact the first Earth the Blue Marble photo the photo was taken with the South Pole as the top.  Almost nobody ever sees that.

Second point - regardless of Ichi's complaining about how the Great Lakes look - because they are horribly distorted in a South Polar Azimuthal projection - this gives us a more realistic look at the southern Continents.  For some one who would be living in New Zealand - why should he care if a map has the Great Lakes all stretched out?  At least this flat map actually shows his country.

The only FEish member to actually come up with anything at all has been Parsifal, and although his idea is really an absurd thought - it is the only one that is actually thought outside of a box - because FE will not work with the current realistic travelling that occurs on a daily basis without some major revamping of what an FE would actually be.

So it is not so much
VICTORY FOR THE ROUND EARTH

As failure for FE to provide practical examples that are actually applicable in real world situations.

You asked which map is more accurate. Clearly if one severely messes up Lake Michigan-Huron and Lake Superior, I am inclined to say that map is horribly wrong. You can't just magically discount a vital part of the world!
What do you think a map is? A Buffet? You can't pick and choose to only worry about certain little snippets!

Yet the other map horribly messes up Australia, New Zealand, Indonesia and Antarctia.  I take it to you the Great lakes are more important?  Is Lake Superior vital to Japanese Whalers who coast along the Antarctic costs?

What do you think a map is? A Buffet? You can't pick and choose to only worry about certain little snippets!

If I have to choose a map that is more accurate, I surely won't pick the map that entirely messes up vital bodies of water. The issue is that the number of lakes and what they're connected to is horribly wrong. That is not a simple distortion!
I've personally traveled Lake Michigan-Huron and Lake Superior so I can personally verify the right map is more accurate with the Great Lakes than the left map. What's so hard to understand?

Based on my regional travels which the right map wins hands down. The left one is so wrong it's disgusting.
I have to base my decision on my regional travels which is why I believe the right map is more accurate although not perfect-which is what the OP has asked for, perfect. Based on where I have traveled, the right map is far, far more accurate.

I say that you don't have enough information to make an informed decision on which map is more accurate overall, unless you have been to at least 50% of the earth and verified it matches the map in question. I realize that this makes answering the question difficult, but no one forced you to do so. You could have said "I can't say which is more accurate because I don't have enough information from personal experience."
