Warped priorities in western society
« on: December 19, 2010, 02:39:30 PM »
Note before I begin: I am not bashing violent films/games. I find them entertaining. The point of this thread is to raise an interesting point.

Violent films and games (that involve, to use rating terms, 'strong bloody violence' receive a 15 rating, which means anyone over 15 can purchase it. Now, if a film contains nudity or people engaging in the act of procreation it receives an instant 18. Why then, is people killing other people in brutal ways (not IRL, but the  appearance of) less of a taboo in western society than adults engaging in a natural act vital to our collective survival?

There's greater temptation to have sex than kill someone.

Not trying to hijack this thread (I agree, it does show bizarre priorities), but what I find particularly irritating is the industry's stance on profanity.  A movie can have perfectly happy and jolly themes and no sexual or violent content, but all it takes is the word "fuck" to be used more than once or twice, and the movie gets bumped up to R/18 automatically.  What the hell is the point?  News flash to the guys who rate movies, kids know all about swear words, and yes, they already use them.

It's not really that black and white, but I understand the point, ie in the UK, a film showing penetration using a knife would be 18 and penetration with a penis R18 (for non-uk, R18 is only to be sold/shown in licensed premises (if it is sold legally, it may be shown in a private household) (public viewing without license is prohibited through most copyright worldwide, look at your CDs/DVDs)

I guess for the same reason that people will protest a film or a play about gay characters kissing or having sex but won't bat an eye at 'Brutal Gory Horror XI'

Techinically you can do that here, but only by two years, and no reasoanable parent would allow their children a shotgun license.

The answer is very simple:
People are embarrassed about sex.  It's hard enough talking to your kids about it.  We have the public school system do it for us.

Gore, however, is not embarrassing in western society.

And those ratings are a direct result of what parents want their kids to see.  And since they don't want to talk about sex, that get's a harsher rating than violence.
I am a terrible person and I am a typical Blowhard Liberal for being wrong about Bom.

Okay, but what about the swearing?  There's no logical reason as to why simply containing a certain word makes a movie less appropriate for kids than someone's head exploding.  Furthermore, it makes the dialogue unrealistic, especially when the characters are in high-stress situations.

Take your own life, for example.  If every individual day of your life was filmed and released as a documentary, what rating do you think they would have?  For myself, I have no doubt that almost every day of my life since I was ten years old would be rated R/18.  Why?  Do I spend my days gruesomely slaughtering people or having sex with every woman I meet?  No.  It's just because on almost every day of my life, I either use or hear the word "fuck" a few times.

In Britain a film can ahve the word 'shit' and be a 12 rating. Maybe even a 'fuck' in there as an expletive, but that would be pushing it.

It should be more about informing parents about what is in the movie.  There should not be a rating of age appropriate, just an indicator of whether the movie contains nudity, sexual content, language, violence, cock, etc. just for the parents to decide whether or not they want to allow their children to see the movie.

On a similar note, I lol'd when I found out that many parents were angry about the movie Bruno because of the abundance of cock swinging in that movie.  Yet it was rated R and they took their kids to see it anyway  ???

I can go weeks without swearing.  I don't see what peoples' need of swearing is all about.  In fact I actually find it rather frustrating as their point is no more improved by adding swears in front or behind.

I swear, but it depends who I am around. In polite company or in the presence of young children, I 'talk dead posh' as one of my friends put it. However, due to my natural dialect (Ilsonian) when I am around mates I use 'fucking' and 'shit' (more recently 'cockshit', thank you FES) a lot. It's just my manner of speech.

I have got in the habit of swearing from rock climbing. In my defense I think it is perfectly natural to start swearing when you are inches away from breaking bones. unfortunately it is carrying over to the rest of my life. I don't see any major problem with swearing although I think you should not use them around small children if for no other reason they may want to learn the meaning of the word such as fuck and force the parents into explaining everything at an inopportune time

Swearing is for the small-minded.

But that point is not exclusive to swearing.  You're questioning the entire concept of interjections (saying "Ouch!" or "Fuck!") as well as emphasis ("The entire bloody thing", "The entire stinking thing", "The entire fucking thing").

A game of Mario Kart between my flatmate and I would be R18 rated for inventive use of every swear up to and beyond 'penguin' as well as violence from flying gamecube controllers.

(Yes, we still have a Gamecube, we can't really afford a PS3 yet and we could steal gamecubes and accessories from home.)
