A: Quite simply RErs can't do that either. There are two many variables. Performance is effected by fuel loads, ambient temperatures and pressures, engine models, the list goes on. Depending on what is happening with other traffic you might be in a hold, or routed out of your way to avoid other traffic or storms. The pilots do not fly direct to their destination either. Depending on the wind they might take off in the opposite direction to the intended route. They then fly SIDS (Standard Instrument Departures) onto a route, follow some beacons, get onto an Oceanic Highway on the way their, follow a STAR (STandard ARrival) on approach, and again go right round the back of an airport to land in the right direction. When pilots are following routes like the typical ones below, how can anyone make a simple straight line DST comparison to ascertain shape? Only the aircraft's Flight Management System really knows how far that trip is. The pilot just uses the data it provides. However FMS source code is closely guarded.

i still find it hard to believe jet streams can make such a big difference though. thanks for showing me though i must admit i havnt read that bit before cheers. afterall it would take months to read everything on here!

more proof of a round earth:

Rotation of the starry sky every 23 hours and 56 minutes, proves Earth moves in relation to the sun. The sun appears to move around Earth in 24 hours. For the stary sky and sun motions to not be an equal time, then it is the Earth moving in relation to the two other references. Repeated for one year, this proves Earth goes around the sun once each year because the starry sky will repeat its patterns once each year.
Sticks of equal lengths perpendicular to the ground have unequal shadows at the same time of day. This proves the world is a sphere.
By measuring the angle of the shadow compared to true north and length of the shadow at noon GMT you can find the latitude and longitude of each stick's location. Collectively, this data proves Earth is a least a half sphere. Repeated on the other side of the world at 12 midnight GMT, you can prove the entire world is a sphere.
The sun rotating around the sky once a day proves rotation of Earth on it's axis if you also know premise 1 and premise 2 as stated above.
