You're obviousley aware of earlier failed plots to either kill or kidnap the King in order to get a Catholic Queen (Princess Elizabth at the time) on the throne. Therefore it stands to reason that the King was the principle target in this case. Since we're not here for a pissing contest or a detailed assesment of the Gunpowder Plot (which we can do if you like?) it's fair to say that the Gunpowder Plot was a plot to assasinate the King of England.

When I saw the movie V for Vendetta I must say I got the wrong impression about Guy Fawkes.  They kind of glorified him a bit in that movie.  Afterwards when I read about the guy I definately got a different picture.
