Zen kernel
« on: October 22, 2010, 06:53:02 PM »
The Zen kernel (http://zen-kernel.org/) is a fork of Linux, specifically optimised for performance on desktop PCs -- unlike mainline Linux, which is optimised for mainframes. Unfortunately, the Zen kernel contains non-free binary blobs, much like the upstream Linux sources. The good news is that the Zen patches still work when applied against Linux-libre source code, so it's easy to build your own free Zen kernel.

I am currently building a customised configuration of Linux 2.6.35-libre2-zen2. I have my CPU on powersave because my computer gets hot very easily and today is a hot day, meaning the build will take longer than usual, but once it's done I'll let you know how it works out.

Well, my configuration resulted in a kernel panic and somehow my old kernel is also broken now -- it will boot, but fails to load X. I'm back on the Debian kernel for now.

I solved the kernel panic issue, and I think I've located the source of my other problem also. I will know for certain when this kernel finishes rebuilding.

I am proud of the fact that I don't understand a word of what Parsifal is talking about.

My Zen kernel is now functional, and it is magnificent.

Yes. Therefore it must be purged.

This is Parsifal's twitter.

I posted this here to inform other GNU/Linux users of something which can provide significantly improved performance on desktops/laptops.

I don't recommend building it on Ubuntu, though. I find Ubuntu has difficulty booting into kernels built from upstream sources, because they patch theirs significantly. Rather, get Debian and then build it.
