Original article: http://www.debian.org/News/2011/20110304Debian has recently been awarded the
"Best Open Source Server Distribution" and also the
"Outstanding Contribution to Open Source/Linux/Free Software" award at Linux New Media Awards 2011. The first award recognises the high quality of technical and standardisation work in Debian, while the latter represents recognition of it being the first major GNU/Linux distribution in the past decade to ship without non-free firmware by default. Installing non-free software in Debian
"squeeze" is entirely the choice of the user, rather than having to choose to remove it after installation, which is a fantastic step forward.
These awards are well-deserved, in my opinion, and they emphasise that Debian continues to excel both technically and socially, where the majority of distributions will pick one or the other.
