Has anyone (on these boards, steve) had any experience of fixing this?

I'm sooo fucked off.

This is what you get for buying proprietary software.

Is it me, or does this have nothing to do with proprietary software.  A yellow/red light is most likely a hardware error, isn't it?

Yes, just as when the array of a million coloured lights in front of me behaves in unexpected ways, I always blame the hardware.

I imagine that would depend on the specifications for the million coloured lights.  But like I said "most likely."

Besides, its not like non-proprietary software is without fault.  It has not been shown in any way that this would not happen or even happen less often with free software.

In fact, if one were to hazard any kind of educated guess, it  happens more often in this situation.

So all you have is an unsubstantiated claim. I see.

Irrelevant.

So what has happened is that the super heated solder stuff has cracked on the board. There are two fixes for this.

1) take playstation apart remove board and heat the solder with a heat gun that powers to at least 700c .
2) Wrap it in a towel and run a hairdryer into the towel until it smells !!!!

Both methods are intended to melt to solder and allow it to reset uncracked.

Oh, or pay £100 and get a refurbed one tomorrow with a new 12 month warranty from Sony.

Sounds more like a way to break it even more.

If you don't have a warranty anymore, go for taking it apart and re-soldering. That, if you know anything about soldering, is the easiest way.

Of course, theres no mod-chips for PS3, so it's kinda useless to open it for anything else. That's sad.

If you have the money, the last option is definitely your best choice.

Because you don't need a chip, just something to plug into the USB port.

My wii did something like this yesterday. It was plugged in and everything, but wasn't turning off. I unplugged the power cable from both the wii and the outlet, and then plugged it back in after around 30 seconds. Everything was better. :D

Glad I don't have one of those shitty consoles that breaks every week.

I haven't had any hardware issues with mine in the three years I've had it.  It even took a dive off my dresser a couple months ago and separated the case where the lights are supposed to be, so I guess I wouldn't even know if I had a yellow/red light of death if got one.

My systems have no problems! Except my first gen XBOX, it's always flashing between green, orange, and red.

Oh wait, thats because its modded. DUHR.

I also modded the 2 wiis that we own (which NEVER get played) and I have no interest in losing xbox live so I'm not touching the 360.
