Why exactly was I banned?

I was banned suddenly without warning somewhere around my latest post, which has been a while ago. I checked once every day to see if I was unbanned, but about a week later it still had not happened.

Anyway, due to busy school and me having a real life I decided I wouldn't bother looking for an admin to contact(Which apparently you have yet to include still in the ban msg). Now I checked if I could log in again, and see! It works!

Now, why was I banned?!

Other people here have called people retarded with no consequences whatsoever. The main difference was that they were arguing in favor of FET at that time. Curious.

They never repeatedly called another user retarded in the upper fora. It's not the word, it's the lack of any other (read: any) content in your posts.

We can't figure it out. The only explanation we can think of is that you were using a proxy or the IP of someone who's banned. There were no other users banned in July who share your host or anything like that, so it doesn't look like anyone banned you by accident. Did you try to log on again in the days after you were first banned?

Doesn't SMF keep some sort of log of this crap?

Has anybody looked at the new version of SMF to see if it handles these situations any better?

I don't know how SMF could help. At the end of the day the mods already have the ability to comment on bans, both in the ban message or in their (private) log. If they don't then that's their choice.

Anyway, I didn't try to log in again. I always have it on auto login, so I guess I assumed I was logged in, and if I recall, it's not possible to log in while banned.

You can't have posted from another IP address because they uniquely identify you as a person. It doesn't matter how you connect to FES, your IP address will always be the same. This is why mods use them to ban people.

It only keeps user reports going back a certain amount of time. Kind of annoying. The ban log goes back quite a ways, but it only keeps a certain amount of the trigger reports logged, and there's nothing in the rest of the ban log that tallies with Catchpa.

Yeah, but even if we didn't comment or someone issued a ban by accident, it would still exist in the ban log, even if it had expired. What's weird is that there's nothing in the ban log which could account for Catchpa's ban. To be honest, my first guess was that someone had put the host down as a trigger for another ban, and Catchpa was collatoral damage, but nothing fits.
