When speaking of handguns, real men carry .45s or .40 in Danns case.  Dann is so manly he doesn't need to carry a .45.

When speaking of long rifle.  Any thing less than .308 or 7.62mm, well, is just girly.  I hate the .556 round.  The thing has no stopping power.   Too much powder not enough lead.  Goes through you like a hot knife through butter.

I think the point of adopting the .556 was more for a perceived change in the role of an infantryman, as urban warfare grew to be more likely than long-range exchanges over open ground. As Afghanistan is mainly the latter, the UK has started giving swaddies 7.62 guns again.

Not really.  Marines are (or, at least, were) required to qualify with the M-16 (NATO 5.56mm) at ranges of 200, 300 and 500 yards.  At least part of the reason for going to 5.56mm was to have a smaller round so that the soldiers could carry more rounds.

Yes.  It for various reasons.  Less weight meant more could be carried.  More cost effective.  It was also a more "humane" way to kill someone in war.  No more blowing limbs off that sort of thing.
