But does that matter to the person in question? If (s)he is so deep into his alternate reality that (s)he can't tell the difference her/himself, yet is very happy nonetheless and does not harm others in the process of believing in her/his alternate reality. If this is the case, can you begrudge her/him for doing so?

If it's my alternate reality, than I can do whatever I want in that reality.  What if all I want is sex?  What if I can get that sex in the holodeck much easier than IRL.  Why would I try to get it in real life?

I've done the same before but only with Ubuntu.  The partitioner decided that it was ok to write a new ext3 partition overlapping a windows NTFS partisian.  No warning or anything.
I found a pay, non-free program that fixed the problem by reconstructing my partition table.

Good luck finding a FREE program.  Might have to pay someone a few hundred dollars to write one.
