He changed his mind at the end.
The story WAS going to be that Han jumps in front of the blaster shot and dies(from scum to hero).  Instead, at the last moment, Lucas decided to let Han live and make Leah Luke's Sister so her and Han could get together without the whole "What about Luke" bit.
