Any drug being illegal is stupid. It's not the government's place to protect people from themselves.

And for an extremely late response, whose job is it then? Because, charging people with protecting themselves from their own hilarious stupidity is only going to end in tears.
Here's an explanation for ya. Lurk moar. Every single point you brought up has been posted, reposted, debated and debunked. There is a search function on this forum, and it is very easy to use.

It is the government's place to provide educational services, so that people can at least make informed decisions. Right now, they're making drugs illegal as a substitute for proper education.

News just in  (well for me at least)....

Could be a massive drop in the price of weed worldwide (up to 80%) if California votes to legalise!

No, they have education too, in many cases. I took a DARE (Drug Abuse Resistance Education) course in 8th grade or so. They educate people, and still make the decision for them that they shouldn't (or can't) use certain substances.

I doubt it. People would stop bringing it into an area if the price drops, this will then cause the price to raise back to near it's previous cost until dealers think its worth it again.

While I agree with your philosophy, I think it's just too idealistic. Half the kids in my area don't graduate high school, so how can you expect them to give a shit about the dangers of drug abuse? The only way proper education could be effective would be if we change the system all together, and that's never going to happen.

So you educate them. You can't force them to give a shit, just make the information available to them, and what they do is their choice.

I think it's ultimately the parents' responsibility to make sure their kids are prepared for the real world.  It really shouldn't fall on the government.

and what they do is their choice.

So they choose to not give a damn. We are still at point A.

I see a quick solution, properly educate them, and let it be known that no person addicted to a drug will receive any financial assistance. Make rehab freely available. etc.

Also, manufacture the drugs legally to cut down on problems.

The biggest difference would be the hugely reduced price would keep addicts from becoming homeless slobs that do nothing but shoot hundreds of dollars worth of dirty drugs into their veins.

I didn't say the government needed to ensure that people got a decent education, only that they should provide that service. Currently, I know of no government which does.

The information IS available though.

I don't think many people have been exposed to it, though. I think that's more of what I meant. Especially young children, soon to be going into high school. Many haven't been given information, and wouldn't know where to find it.

Yeah, they made the decision after being informed. As long as they're only hurting themselves, I see no problem. I don't think adults need to have babysitters.

Yes. That would be optimum.

Every kitchen on Earth has drug addicts in it, and they work hard because as one of my managers put it "if they don't they can't get that fix."

Drug addicts are only poor because their habit is so expensive, not because they can't or won't work.

Interesting. It could work, however I don't see congress ever letting heroin be manufactured let alone legalized. Again, idealistic. The whole system needs to change.

Also, you are forgetting about other negative affects of drug abuse besides the financial ones. What about health? Social problems? Drug abusers have the tendency to harm people around them (and they don't make very good parents either)

Quick answers, most health problems are due to the impurity of the drugs or the crappy methods in which they are used. Yes addicts make bad parents, but so do alcoholics. We don't make alcohol illegal just because you are a bad parent whilst drunk.

Even the purest opiates have very harsh health effects.

So what should we do with all the kids who are going to be slapped around by their intoxicated parents?

Deal with it?

Also, people high on opiates very rarely are violent.

My answer: the same thing we do now days with all the kids slapped around by their intoxicated parents. Accept it and punish anyone willing to beat the shit out of a child abuser.

there's a lot of misinformation about it on the internet which people belive to be true:

It's not possible to get addicted

It's not harmful or carcinogenic

etc.

basically people who want it legal make up stories about it pretending it's better than it is just because that's what they want.. and impressionable people start to beleive it (even thought it's a lie). Combined with the ridiculous anti-drug campaigns which made anyone who argues against drugs lose their credability.... it's a slipperly slope and I am very worried what will happen in the future if they make it legal everyone will start using it and the country will grind to halt

So you are suddenly going to start using drugs for no reason at all if they become legal?

People can't make decision for themselves?

If somebody wanted to do drugs they would do it, regardless of the fact that it is legal or illegal.

Although you do have an interesting point - the arbitrariness of making some harmful drugs legal and others illegal.
