Airplane
« on: June 26, 2010, 09:32:50 AM »
In a few hours I'll ride a plane for the first time. I can't wait to look out the window and see for myself that there is no curvature. There has been a lot of discussion about whether curvature is visible from airplanes, and now I have a chance to finally see it for myself. I'm super excited.

If you've already made up your mind that you won't see anything, then your brain will trick you into thinking that you do not see any curvature. You are biased, so your testimony should be taken with skepticism.

People assume the Earth is round, thus expect to see curvature. I'd say he's less biased than your average RE'er.

How is being biased towards a flat earth "less biased" than biased towards a round earth?

I'm not sure he's "sure" the Earth is flat. However, most RE'ers are "sure" the Earth is round.

In any case, I was on an airplane recently, and I found any experiments to detect curvature were made very difficult by clouds and mountains on the horizon. Also I was seated near the wing which obscured a portion of the horizon.

The conditions would have to be near perfect to make any conclusions about the curvature of the horizon.

I was on a plane twice in my life. I saw clouds. They were pretty.  :)

I just hope to gather my own observations, it will be a fun experience. I know that it is unlikely I'll be able to see, but it would be nice if I can. I'll even take pictures if conditions permit.

Try to also get a picture of some kind of long straight line on the ground through your window as a comparison point. Some here have said that airplane windows will make straight lines appear curved, and it would be nice to settle that matter as well.

If the windows are concave it would distort the image.

I went up in a plane, watching as the city lights vanished.  Even at night, my vision was limited.  Sometimes I could see city lights, sometimes not.

Also, I saw the moon in the early morning as it reflected the sun's rays.

Which is why I asked for that specific picture.

How many commercial airplanes go as high as to make the Earths roundness visible?

Dear God. No it wouldn't.

It is an established fact that there is no such things as windows on planes. It would be impossible and highly dangerous to look out of a "window" due to the gamma radiation. But of course the FE conspirators will never tell you this. Instead they fit screens to planes to look like windows, and then show an image of a flat earth.

I watched fireworks from above while on the observation deck of the Skylon Tower in Niagara Falls.  It was cool.

No.

I also got to see lightning from above. It was crazy.

How many commercial airplanes go as high as to make the Earths roundness visible?
On the Concorde at cruising altitude over the Altantic (typically) and using most of the windows at once, I understand that you could readily see the curvature. I understand that in the early days of operations, it was one of the perks that a flight attendent would arrange for photographs of this feature. Reference: http://home.netcom.com/~bswang/conctrip/part5.html

Today, to my knowledge, there are no commercial flights that reach the required altitude.

I read an article about how they want to bring the concord back into service. That will be nice.

This is from a peer-reviewed paper on exactly this topic:

Quote
In view of the agreement between the visual observations,
measurements of the photographs, and the
theoretical curvatures, it seems well established that
the curvature of the Earth is reasonably well understood
and can be measured from photographs. The
threshold elevation for detecting curvature would
seem to be somewhat less than 35; 000 ft but not
as low as 14; 000 ft. Photographically, curvature may
be measurable as low as 20; 000 ft.

Of course, you have to assume ideal viewing conditions such as a clear horizon.

By the way, did you get any pictures?

Roger Murdock: Flight 2-0-9'er, you are cleared for take-off.
Captain Oveur: Roger!
Roger Murdock: Huh?
Tower voice: L.A. departure frequency, 123 point 9'er.
Captain Oveur: Roger!
Roger Murdock: Huh?
Victor Basta: Request vector, over.
Captain Oveur: What?
Tower voice: Flight 2-0-9'er cleared for vector 324.
Roger Murdock: We have clearance, Clarence.
Captain Oveur: Roger, Roger. What's our vector, Victor?
Tower voice: Tower's radio clearance, over!
Captain Oveur: That's Clarence Oveur. Over.
Tower voice: Over.
Captain Oveur: Roger.
Roger Murdock: Huh?
