Hope FErs can figure this one out.

Hi,

I ran across an article featured on FOX News.

"Man captures pictures of Earth with near-space balloon"

I suppose the title explains itself; NASA wasn't involved with this.

How is this video related to the shape of the Earth?

The mention of seeing the curvature of the earth; clearly you can see it, which I think should be good enough... no?

Not at all. It just shows the circular shape of the Earth.

Are you arguing with yourself?

Anyways, the curvature would certainly indicate that the Earth is not flat... thanks for clearing that one up.

Thank you for your feedback, Catchpa. It is, as always, most appreciated. However, even though it saddens me greatly, I have to say "right back at you", or, alternatively, "pot, kettle, black". Similar topics have been discussed countless times with no proper explanations from RE'ers. If you do have a grand rebuttal, which for some reason you haven't used by now, I encourage you to bring it up. Due to the fact that asking you to use the search function simply won't work, please find a shortened answer below. Should you seek a more detailed one... oh well, search ftw.

Are you arguing with yourself?
No. I'm sorry for not making myself entirely clear. To further explain: a spherical and flat earth would both appear circular on two-dimensional pictures. Ergo, a two-dimensional picture is hardly relevant to the subject of the Earth's shape.

thanks for clearing that one up.
Clearing what up? I said it's circular. Circular and spherical are not the same thing.

Most people claiming to be abducted don't provide images to back their stories up.

Well, I think that the ones that maintain their stories while under hypnosis and/or pass polygraph tests should be given some consideration.

Why would we even discuss the authenticity of these pictures? Real or not, they're worthless. I agree that these pictures show curvature. However, an edge of a circle is, shockingly, curved. So is a sphere. Both possibilities exist, and these particular pictures don't get us any closer to telling which one is right. This is exactly why I asked about their relevancy in my first response.

So we should only blindly trust the ones who do provide images of their flying saucers zipping away through the night sky then?

If the images can't be shown to be faked, sure, why not? And it isn't blind trust if there is evidence to back it up.

A similar distortion can be created with a slight fish-eye lens.

Any lens, and particularly a wide-angle lens, will produce barrel distortion.   This, however, probably isn't in play here.  The negligible curvature shown is just as consistent with a the edge of a disc seen at altitude.  It certainly doesn't look like a sphere to me by any stretch of the imagination.

Sometimes its the edge of the disk, sometimes its the edge of the spotlight sun, sometimes its fake and sometimes its a lense. I wish you guise could decide.

well we don't have an answer for everything, but when it comes to observed phenomena on Earth, when you take its shape as round, all of the problems go away.

nope that one was found to be round. NASA.
and anyway, we're talking about the data and observations. there is nothing you can do right now to prove the earth flat and be correct.
