There are plans for AS, but it's a case of modification. We're certainly not getting rid of it.

We already enlarged them once, we went a little too high and they looked odd and threw off the forum layout. So we shrunk it down a little and we have bigger avatars.

That's kind of dependent on the whole 'upgrade' situation too.

I really don't like huge avatars and signatures. I think each time you post the majority of the area you take up should be a new idea, not a constant spamming of a humongous picture talking about the game that you sometimes play that has nothing to do with the site.

This site's layout has always been kind of elegant with its simplicity. I've even been to sites where I could not for the life of me tell where a post ends and the half page of signature began.

I agree, as big avatars and signatures can be really irritating. I've been to forums where images will be closed in the posts, and you can open them by clicking "Spoil." I thought that was neat, as I don't particularly enjoy scrolling down images after images just to read a sentence.

Yeah, I'm also perfectly happy with the current size. I don't like it when they're too small, just because it looks kind of ugly, but I think we have a happy medium here.

So why isn't there a limit? 100x400 is just about perfect. Maybe a tad bigger.

How about a new rule, read the FAQ. If someone asks something plainly answered in the FAQ, or contests it without any real argument as their first post, instant permaban. Inflammatory or derogatory comments make up the first post(s)? Permaban. They're not likely to add much if that's their first impression.
No but I'm guess your what? 90? Cause you just so darn mature </sarcasm>

I would agree, but if someone is polite, but stupid/missed the FAQ somehow, they shouldn't be banned. If they are rude and don't read the FAQ, then they deserve a ban.

If they seem like they genuinely just missed it and wanted to contribute, then no mod would actually ban them in that case (except maybe Hara, but that would be for lulz).

I think a permaban might be a little too severe, but I agree that something should be done about the non-FAQ readers.  Maybe mods could be a little stricter on locking threads that ask obvious FAQ questions?  Just an idea.

I still think that new members shouldn't be allowed to create threads in Debate and Discussion until they pass 100 posts, to stop a lot of Questions and Clarification material being posted there. But you know, I've been saying this for months, so I don't expect anybody to listen.

I had a similar rule when .net still had traffic.  It didn't end up doing anything except making the forum with the limit on it empty.

How about a new rule, read the FAQ. If someone asks something plainly answered in the FAQ, or contests it without any real argument as their first post, instant permaban.

Whether the FAQ can legitimately claim to answer any questions is debatable.

Here's a proposed FAQ:

Q. What about cars?
A. They are powered by tiny dwarves on bikes who drink petrol.

Then in the forum:

"Hi was reading your FAQ about cars and it doesn't make sense..."

PERMABAN!

I still think that new members shouldn't be allowed to create threads in Debate and Discussion until they pass 100 posts, to stop a lot of Questions and Clarification material being posted there. But you know, I've been saying this for months, so I don't expect anybody to listen.

Which will mean that every other thread gets derailed as noobs jump in with "What about stars?"

Or that they make their threads in Questions and Clarification instead, perhaps? You know, that place they end up getting moved to anyway?

Uhhh, if our faq makes so little sense why did you have to make up a ridiculous example? If the problem is so prevalent you should have quoted a real example. Also, I have never banned someone for asking a question. Good job otherwise, it was a very admirable attempt at a short story for someone of your IQ.

Which is nice.

Douchebag's proposition is that in the future people are banned for asking questions (which are assumed to already be answered in the FAQ)

Yes it is, as it means they haven't read the FAQ. If they don't understand an answer or if they have a problem with it (one with some sort of base, not "LOLURRONG") then they can put that in Q&C, as they're either asking a question or wanting clarification.

Your example was not what he suggested. Yours was simply someone saying the explanation made no sense, we are talking about someone simply asking a question directly from the faq. I read the faq long before I registered to make an account, and understood FE theory as far as lurking could take me before my first post. It's not that hard to resist the urge to call everyone retards, and try to understand their position.

Yes. I suspect a great number of people read the FAQ first, then join and post.

That's why there's so many that start off with "I read the FAQ and it doesn't make sense..."

The point can be made that since the FAQ doesn't truly answer the questions it sets out to answer, noobies feel the need to ask the question again.

Crustinator, whilst I would be against bans of this nature, it is a reality that many, many members open topics with questions that are answered in the FAQ. Here's a good example:

http://www.theflatearthsociety.org/forum/index.php?topic=32786.0

Now, he claims to have read the FAQ, but the reality is that those questions are answered in the FAQ. Conclusion: he has not read it, or at least not read it properly. It happens all the time. The real problem is that many users cannot be bothered fully reading the FAQ.
