Linux is awful
« on: August 06, 2010, 09:20:47 AM »
This is absolutely true. Whenever there's a flame far there'll be these linux and mac fanboys each touting their OS as 'the best' and urging everyone else to 'make the switch'.

But when someone DOES make the switch, it's so hard to get learn the basics because of the condescending attitude thrown about by anyone who has spent a couple of months using linux.

The only places where I pick up any information about linux is when someone's trying to 'prove' to a windows fan how a certain feature is 'better' than in "M$Window$" or available in a greater variety of of 'options' than "windoze(suxx! aah! i hate hate windoze! lol!)"

I'm sure there'd me many more people who'd like to use linux if the initiation weren't so painful.

Linux users frequently intimidate people with an unfounded attitude of superiority. This intimidation does exactly what the linux users promote fighting against-restricting the freedom of an individual.

There is a real problem here -- support of open-source software. It takes time to walk someone through the basic stuff ("You can't get to a webpage? Okay. Do you have an IP address? Yes? Okay, can you resolve names? Etc.") It's not much fun for RandomGuruUser to walk someone through the same series of steps over and over. If you can solve most of the problem and you have a fairly concise question, then it's usually not a problem to answer.

Traditionally, in the *IX open-source world, you tend to expect the user to go out and understand how the thing works. But, frankly, that doesn't scale up to the number of people who are using Linux these days. It makes no sense to teach every one of them about the guts of the networking system, for example. What people want is something that's simple that they can understand and doesn't require a lot of reading tech docs.

Right now, if you have a specific error message, you can maybe run out and search for that message and hope that you hit a forum post about it, but for "I don't get a web page when I try to go somewhere in my web browser", you're out of luck.

What it would be nice is for someone to write collaborative flowchart software. Something like a Wiki (WikiFlow?) -- anyone can add to it. When someone has a Linux networking problem, you point them to the Linux WikiFlow. They go through it the flowchart ("Do you have an IP address? Here's how to check. If you do, click here, if not, click here"). If they can't understand a particular question, allow them to flag the node and attach a question. If they get through the whole flowchart and the suggestions at the end don't fix their solution, they go out and ask for help, and when the problem is fixed, the person who did so looks at their IRC or forum log or whatever and just adds it to the WikiFlow, so that anyone else hitting the problem avoids the issue in the future. That way, each person can stop walking people through the basic stuff, and by someone saying "I got to final node X in the flowchart and it didn't solve my problem", anyone they hand their link to node X knows a bunch about where the problem is on their system, because they know the answers to those questions.

It's not that Linux isn't user friendly, it just that Linux is picky about who its friends are.  And even best of friends fight from time to time.

You say this every time one of these threads pops up. Also, Linux really isn't accessed directly by anyone except those who know what they're doing.

It is totally up to you. As long as your grapefruit is sugar compatible or you know the basic chemical component of sugar.

Depends. If you're a Mac user it's already glazed with really pretty sugar and you are not permitted to remove it.

With Windows you are permitted to use it but the bag it comes from may not be clean and may be grown in unethical conditions.

With Linux you are free to have sugar assuming you contact the suppliers yourself, know the chemical makeup needed to order it but it will be clean sugar and grown in an environmetally sustainible way by hippies who live on a commune.
