XMPP (formerly known as Jabber) is a free, open and decentralised IM protocol. It works comparably to email, whereby there is no central server, but anyone who wants to can set up their own XMPP server and communicate with other servers. You can set up your own XMPP server if you are so inclined, or else find one in your local area run by a community group. There are several dedicated XMPP clients out there, such as Tkabber, as well as support built into several multi-protocol clients such as Pidgin.

Anyone who wants to reach me on Jabber can do so at steven@steven-mcdonald.id.au.
