2010 FIFA World Cup
« on: June 06, 2010, 05:57:00 PM »
I'm no expert in football, but I realize there are people here who are very enthusiastic about football. Thus, I created this thread exclusively for discussion on the upcoming matches in this tournament. ;D

I'm rooting for Spain and Argentina, mainly due to Spain's near flawless achievement since Euro 2008 and Argentina's success in the Summer Olympics 2008 and onward. Messi, Xavi, and Torres are among my favorites. Spain broke the curse after defeating Italy and went on to win the rest of the Euro Cup; I hope Spain will do so again, this time in a World Cup. Either way, I have high hopes for these two teams.

South Africa vs Mexico

Uruguay vs France

I'm leaning toward France and Mexico in these two matches. Mexico defeated Italy just recently in a friendly match, which increased my confidence in the Mexican team in the upcoming match against South Africa. However, the South Africans have performed well in the past, and they would certainly give their best on home soil. I think France may have a higher chance to win, although I'm aware Uruguay is a very competent team for their performance in Copa America. I hope Domenech doesn't screw it up again, since we all know Euro 2008 was a nightmare for the French team.

Some funny diplomatic U.S-British humor. These are the actual emails (source Yahoo)

From: Philip Breeden, US Embassy London

To: Martin Longden, British Embassy Washington DC

Subject: World Cup Bet

Mr. Longden, It has not escaped our attention that a certain sporting event is fast approaching, and that our respective nations will soon be meeting on the fields of South Africa.

My Ambassador has asked me to see if your Ambassador might be interested in a small wager? We will understand if you decline, given the outcome of the last such encounter.

Sincerely, Philip Breeden, U.S. Embassy, London

Mr. Breeden,

Even for such an exceptionally optimistic nation as the United States, I am struck by the confidence with which your Ambassador proposes this wager. It is testament, I assume, to the generosity of your great nation - since the British Ambassador does not anticipate paying out.

Your email does not specify the exact terms of the wager. May I suggest that, in the event of an England victory, the US Ambassador agrees to entertain the British Ambassador at a steak-house of his choosing in downtown DC? And in the event that the United States is able to engineer a fortuitous win over England, then my man will entertain yours at a London pub of his choosing. Loser pays.

Your reference to a previous sporting encounter between our two countries puzzles me. Since the history of English football is long and extensive, in contradistinction to US soccer, I regret that I cannot immediately recall the encounter to which you refer. No doubt it is remembered fondly on these shores; we have quite forgotten it, however.

Are you sure you want to do this?

Yours sincerely, Martin Longden British Embassy Washington DC

Mr. Longden ,

It is with great pleasure, and no small measure of anticipation, that the U.S. Ambassador accepts the terms of the wager. I am surprised, given the well known love of the British for history, that you have forgotten what happened the last time the ?special relationship? was tested on the pitch. Of course, given the result, you are to be forgiven for having misplaced that particular episode in your memory banks. I refer of course to the victory of the U.S. over England in the 1950 World Cup.

It is true that our soccer (a fine English word we have kindly preserved for you) history is not as long and illustrious as yours. However, as your generals noted during WWII, we have a unique capability for quickly identifying and advancing talent.

Game on!

Sincerely, Philip Breeden

Mr. Breeden,

Very well; it?s a bet!

Incidentally, you should know that the Ambassador takes his steak like American soccer victories - somewhat rare.

Sincerely,

Martin Longden

I read a piece in Todays Golfer reviewing the best courses and best golfing footballers from each country. They were unable to actually review North Korea's golf course so had to look it up. Apparently they have one and the only person to play it is the Great Leader, it says he got 13 hole in ones !!

Both teams played well. The Mexican team started out aggressively and had a greater possession of the ball, but the two teams evened out towards the end. As it seems, the South African team did gave their best on home soil.

Best of luck to Uruguay and France. Let the match begin!

Jack, apologies for hijacking your thread but i feel i must give some sort of match report for the Uruguay/France game.

For the first 80 minutes of this game it was a basic training ground exercise is minimal attack versus over strengthed defence. Barring the odd counter attack, the defending team far out stripped the attacking team in the last third for numbers.

Barring the champions league semi final Ribery has had a great season, literally dragging his team to the final, yet on the world stage against a second rate team such as the south american minors he flattered to deceive. He showed none of the pace and skill for Bayern and at no point did he open his legs and test the right back.

That said, he did setup possible the greatest chance of the game. A lucky deflection left him passed the right back and in an acre of space and a slide rule pass across the six yard box left Govou with a chance which was easier to score. He decided the more difficult option and with pefect skill knocked it about 6ft wide.

Later in the first half, Forlan brought the ball down on the left hand side, cut inside and fired straight down the keepers throat. However, as per most shots this tournament, the keeper took no chances and palmed it away. Clearly giving an opportunity for the cameras to click away as he went down in installments.

Moving to the second half and we are looking at much of the same.

With the only piece of play that brought Suarez into the game, well apart from him troubling the linesman by continually being offside, saw him chest the ball down to Forlan who was about 10 yards out. As the ball dropped Abidal closed him down enought to force a snap shot which did nothing more than scare a camera man.

Even though France have stepped into this game and this group as clear favourites and with time running out, they leave all of the tactical thinking to the south americans. With this Uruguay replaced Gonzalez with Lodeiro...who then got himself booked after 90 seconds for throwing the ball away.

As Uruguay pushed and pressed they replace the less then effective Suarez with the old and experienced head of Abreu who clearly did not let the pressure of the occassion get to him.

Shortly after this, it clearly dawned on Domenech that previously replacing Anelka in a striaght swap with Henry was not the greatest attacking move ever. As such, her decided to finally bring on Malouda with 15 minutes to go.

No less than 5 minutes later, Lodeiro decided that one of Sagnas legs was too staight and decided it would look better in 2 peices. Thus earning himself the duty of getting the bath warm.

Now despite the opposition being down to 10 men, the French tactic was not to put Malouda and Ribery on the wings to tantalise the full backs and delivery some bread and butter balls for Henry. Oh no. Instead they decided they would pump balls into the box and let one of the centre halfs attack the wing.

With less than 30 seconds to go France were gifted a free kick on the edge of the opposition area. Henry took the ball from Ribery and took his run up and took one of the weakest freekicks ever. If it hadnt have hit Suarez in the head i do not think it would have reached the keeper it was that tame.

Despite the fact that these new balls are meant to move more (like every tournament), i think there were about 2 shots on target all game.

Final score Uruguay 0 - 0 France and really a game to forget.

Oh, you're more than welcome to do so. :) After all, it would be weird if a thread about World Cup matches has no match reports.

At any rate, yeah, it was a basic game of offense vs defense. As usual, the French team started out slowly but gained momentum as the game progresses. They made good passes along the way and got plenty of ball possessions, but I felt there was something missing in them. Despite the fact that they had more men near the end of the game, they failed to seal the deal. The Uruguayan team put some really solid defenses, I have to say.

It wasn't a very pleasant game overall, as both teams committed numerous fouls.
