Noob question: what keeps the air and light on the earth?
« on: May 14, 2010, 11:36:44 PM »
what keeps air from falling off of the face of the earth?
What keeps light from falling to the ground?
earth goes upwards at y"(t)=9.8, and light from a laser parallel to earth travels at x'(t)=c
therefore after 100 second has elapsed, the earth has a height of 49km above light which is still at 0

how? air near the edge could surely fly into outerspace, what keeps it within the region of your earth

Ice wall. Some people believe the earth is infinite. That would do the job too.

ok Trade winds and jet stream how does that work then both need the earth to turn on its axis and be sphere like
Then you have provided evidence for the Earth being a sphere

Where is the proof for any of this?

The earth is flat...so something has to keep the air in.

Easy, the proof is that it must be there in order for the theory to work!

You can't use "The earth is flat" to prove that the earth is flat.

You can't use "The earth is flat" to prove that the earth is flat.

You didn't ask for proof that the Earth is flat, you asked for proof of there being some obstacle to the air escaping.

In reference to the OP, what "keeps light in" on a spherical Earth?

not a whole lot
most gets reflected back in to space and even then only some of the IR stays in see green house effect
but im going to guess you mean what we can see as light not the whole EM band
in the case of visible light it just keeps bouncing off stuff till some thing absorbs it and then it gets turned in to heat
but most of it gets reflected back in to space

Yes, which is why I wanted to know why the first poster thought that light needed to be "kept in" on any kind of Earth.

*pssst*

UA was already disproved-ish: http://www.theflatearthsociety.org/forum/index.php?topic=38640.0

UA is crap.
No it wasn't

Actually, it was.  if you'd like, we could revisit that forum, and we could disprove it even more.  Or, we can take it here:

You guys still never told me why the hell UA only affects the Earth.  And if you say "Because the Earth is special", I win by default.

Trolling makes me angry.

For the same reason that a table only affects things which are on it?

James, what makes you think that your table model is the correct UA model?

What the hell does a table have to do with a mysterious, magical, SELECTIVE force that seems to favor the Earth, but not any other celestial body?  The term is "Universal Acceleration", correct?  Implying that it affects THE UNIVERSE?  Because it seems to me it's only the Earth, which is absurd.

A table's force is selective - it affects only things which are on it. The UA's force is only 'selective' in this regard also. What is so difficult for you to grasp about this concept?

It's a pretty bad misnomer. Perhaps you should reconsider its name.

Pretty much UA which is magic. Cause the idea of gravity is so ridiculous, that the idea that the Earth flies through space because of magic was invented.

what keeps light from falling beneath the earth? the fact that the earth isn't moving in height relative to light shot parallel to the ground.

It would only have to extend up about 62 miles to hold the atmosphere in.

No, because air at the edge could then fly off. air isn't static.

Acceleration, with a wall as high as the atmolayer, can hold the atmolayer in the FE model just as gravitation holds the atmosphere in the RE model according to the Equivalence Principle. To escape, air molecules would have to travel faster than FE. This is similar to how air molecules escape from RE's gravitational field.

Yes, which is why I wanted to know why the first poster thought that light needed to be "kept in" on any kind of Earth.

it was poorly phrased. what I meant was what keeps light from falling, as the earth goes up.

and @jack.
Lolno,
you can't just declare Equivalency Principal!!!!

if an air molecule was going at some speed v out towards space, then it would still be contained within earth's atmosphere, as gravity would cause it to come back. however, when it flies at the top of the ice wall with relative speed v, it can go over, with nothing to keep it in. and don't you think such an Ice wall would be observable if we went to the tip of Chile, and looked with a telescope or something?
