Slivers ban was uncalled for
« on: May 12, 2010, 09:35:09 AM »
Because I'm not sure if people still haven't been given the right to complain, I'll be starting this in the hopes that I can at least change his ban.

The thread in question is this one:
http://www.theflatearthsociety.org/forum/index.php?topic=38823.80

First of all, I don't know for how long the ban is. I suppose it's justified to give him one day or just a few hours to calm down. Anything more and it's much uncalled for and IMO not justifiable.

In the very same thread we see this kind of behavior from Ichi, it has since been edited by Jack to make it much much smaller(I think he originally used the biggest font size). Notice something missing? If not, read closely: He was not warned at all, even when a moderator found it neccesary to edit his post.
In light of this, I don't think banning Sliver should've happened, especially when you see the likes of Levee posting this:
Quote
gdissaray, your neurons must be full of crap...to believe that 1 billion trillion tons of water stay glued next to a spherical surface which flies through space at 107000 km/hr, means that you too can be accused of illegally carrying a brain inside your skull. Perhaps those three years you spent in first grade were not nearly enough to remove the crap from your mind...

These are personal attacks using swear words and at the same time flaming/harassing along with troublemaking(read site rules for the very definition of these)

You'll notice that Levee is continually using denigrating attacks. Notice something missing again? Probably, but I'll spell it out for you: He has not been warned by anyone either. The fact that his attacks are personal as well unlike Sliver who simply used profanity to put emphasis on the following word, makes Slivers ban even more questionable.

I have also noticed that FES do not get warned for the same sort of behavior that we get warned for, and you cited a great example there.

While this is topic is not about discrimination, you certainly do have a point. Though I wish to keep this on the three individuals mentioned, and perhaps more if there's evidence for that.

Silver swore, James warned him, he repeated the same behavior in the upper forums.

Why was this uncalled for?

Read original post perhaps. I am explaining why, though if you wish clarification on something more specific, do tell.

As per standard moderating procedure, I warned Sliver after his first rule transgression. After he contravened the warning only a few days later, he was banned.

Nor was this an isolated incident, in reviewing his posting history I have noticed a trend of low-content posting and abuse. I am completely justified in my decision, and in following site procedure, which I have been enforcing systematically for the last 3 years.

Members should be aware that those who use profane or abusive language in the main discussion forums do so at their own risk. Ordinances against profane language and low-content posting exist on the site, and those who receive official warnings should not be surprised if they face bans when these warnings are ignored.

James

You did not account for both Levee's and Ichi's posting. If they are not facing bans nor warnings, why is Sliver?
Also, I fixed the links.

When have I ever insulted someone or used profane language? That thread is basically everyone else trying to call me stupid and saying I fail. Instead of calling you all "idiots" or dumb, I plainly stick to the argument instead of the low-content posts present.

I never said you did, but you were clearly going against the rules as the edit made by Jack shows. If it gives warnings to say "fuck" a single time, so should deliberately taking up space with unnecessary huge letters which is nothing more than an annoyance and direct troublemaking.

I'm a little confused as to whether the ban was for low-content posting, or simply saying the word "fuck" in a serious forum. :-\

Also, if it's the latter, am I allowed to say it here when we're discussing the use of the word, like the way I just did in the line above?  Do we have to refer to the word by something stupid like "the f-bomb"?  Or are Catchpa and I about to get banned because we just used the word?

No Saddam, you don't need to worry. In fact, that is precisely why bans for profane or low-content posts are not hard-and-fast rules, but are at moderator discretion. The difference between this kind of discussion and the drivel which Sliver has been posting should be obvious.
