Clear things up.
« on: May 07, 2010, 05:46:42 PM »
I'm a little confused with regards to this forum/society, i'll explain:

Firstly, do people here genuinley believe the earth is flat?

Secondly; I noticed there is alot of, how can I say...arguments on these forums. If you guys believe the earth is flat, why do you let this continue, why do you encourage people to argue with you...this makes me think that this forum is just a joke, and you're just trying to frustrate random people who don't udnerstand that perhaps this forum is actually a joke...is it?

The latter is perhaps you want to teach people that the earth is flat, and I gather you will probably say this is the case. However, if it is the case, again why do you continue to try this if nobody ever agrees with you? I have had a look through some topics, and I have to admit, the Flat earth arguments are somewhat Modernist and "rational". By this I am trying to say that you believe in what you see, and from these observations you come up with "rational" solutions which arent necessarily correct in terms the bigger picture. I am by no means narrow minded, if I don't believe something and it is proven to me through a sequence of logical steps then I will believe it. Your Flat Earth arguments simply aren't doing this.
In reference to what I just said, dont anybody drop the "faith" bomb, believing the earth is flat or spherical is not about faith, its about facts.

What are your thoughts on this? I am by no means trying to shove you from your position, I just need to clear up WHY you have chosen your position.
Please read what I've written carefully, I like to think i've written a just topic compared to other people who just decide to rant, so some good constructive replies would be really appreciated.

Take care
Jared.

Not really. Maybe a few of them, but the majority are trolls or mentally ill.

Secondly; I noticed there is alot of, how can I say...arguments on these forums. There's no point having these ideas if they don't open them to the rest of the world to see. If you believe in something, you want to convince other people that it's true. This is quite simple, really.

The latter is perhaps you want to teach people that the earth is flat, and I gather you will probably say this is the case. However, if it is the case, again why do you continue to try this if nobody ever agrees with you?

What? You can teach people stuff, even if they don't agree with you. I don't agree with everything my history books say, but they can still teach me and explain how it could've happened anyway.

I'm perfectly aware that this forum is just one giant troll, and I'm fine with it. I'm learning things that could help in any future trolling efforts.

I'm honestly still here only because this is an interesting thought experiment, and I need a good brain exercise every now and then.

They do believe what they see.  The problem is how often they cover their eyes.

Hi there, I am a Flat Earth believer. There are a lot of globularists on this site as you have realised; this is because we do like to allow them to come and discuss with us as we are trying to get the word out about the shape of the Earth. You are right, this does lead to a lot of arguments between globularists and zeteticists, but that is the price we have to pay. As believers in a minority belief, we know what it's like to have your views disregarded, and that is why we are very keen on people of all different belief systems coming to the site and having their say. If nobody ever came here to debate with us, we would never be able to let them know the truth! And besides, some of the arguments are really quite interesting. Everyone learns something new about the world when they come to the Flat Earth Society to have a discussion!

For the second time, I request that you stop using the term "zeteticist" as a synonym to one who believes in a flat earth. A true zeteticist would not think the earth was flat, as the evidence of their own eyes would tell them it was not when they saw a ship appearing to sink over the horizon. Learn to understand your own philosophy a little better.

No, you ought to stop trying to misappropriate our terminology in order to discredit our position. I suggest you read chapter I of Earth Not a Globe where the zetetic method is outlined in full. You will see it is stringently adhered to throughout the rest of the book, and indeed through subsequent zetetic research.

How does watching a ship sink prove the Earth is not flat?

It affirms the tragedy inherent to human existence and compels the weak-minded to seek refuge in a majoritarian worldview (in this case, a false one about the shape of the Earth).

From Chapter 1 of Earth Not a Globe:
"Collecting manifest and undeniable facts, arranging them in logical order and observing what is naturally and fairly deducible therefrom."
Manifest and undeniable fact number one - ships appear to sink over the horizon.
Manifest and undeniable fact number two - an object moving along a proven flat planar surface has never been observed to appear below the level of that surface.

Again, from ENAG Chapter 1:
"Assumption of premises, and selection of evidence to corroborate assumptions, is everywhere and upon all subjects the practice of theoretical philosophers! [i.e. non-zetetic people]"
Thus it is stated that you cannot deny Manifest and Undeniable Fact Two by claiming the earth is a flat planar surface as an assumed premise.

The only conclusion available to a true zetetic is that a ship appearing to sink over the horizon is incompatible with a flat earth. But wait, what's this? You want to invent a new law of physics to explain it? Let's see what Rowbottom has to say on that practice:
"Until the practice of theorising is universally relinquished, philosophy will continue to be looked upon... as a vain and mumbling pretension... Let there be adopted a true and practical free thought method, with sequence as the only test of truth and consistency. Let the practice of theorising be abandoned as one oppressive to the reasoning powers."

In other words, don't just make shit up to fit what you want. Build only on observable facts.

Don't tell me I don't understand zeteticism. I understand it better because I'm looking at it objectively. Your angle on it is pick-and-choose bits of it as it suits you, like the Spanish Inquisition who represented the church yet broke the basic commandment "thou shalt not kill". Hypocrisy.

You haven't answered my question. If I watch a ship sailing out to sea and it strikes a coral reef a few kilometres out and sinks, it would be appearing to sink over the horizon from my perspective. How would this prove anything regarding the shape of the Earth?

I don't feel the need to enlighten you, and everyone else gets it, so no, I will not be laying more troll bait for you. You haven't provided any valid reasoning why this is the case, and seem to be relying on the unfounded claim that "everyone else gets it" to prove your point. Even if we assume this as true for the sake of argument, I am sure I need hardly remind you that this form of reckoning constitutes an instance of argumentum ad populum, the logical fallacy that because an idea is widely accepted, it must be true.
