Goons grief Star Trek Online
« on: February 25, 2010, 09:59:17 PM »
In MMOs, there is nothing that I hate more than carebears. These are the people who quit Eve Online because they can't handle a game where you actually have something to lose. They prefer games like WoW, where everyone holds hands and sings happy songs together while they PVE. They like games that have a magic resurrect button when they die, which will bring them back to life and give them back all of their equipment in perfect shape, so they never, ever lose anything. And when someone threatens their happy, safe, carefree world, they rage and whine to the devs until either they get their way, or their fragile psyche finally shatters and they ragequit the game, leaving a trail of emo tears in their wake.

But on February 2nd, the Eve rejects rejoiced at the release of World of Star Trek Star Trek Online. They finally had a spaceship game with a risk to reward ratio approaching 0:1, and literally no death penalty, at all. All was well in the universe...

..until one day, those evil, griefing, morally bankrupt Goons showed up. The Goons had waged war on every game they ever played, and STO was no exception. From the moment their accounts were activated, they began searching for ways to make the poor carebears miserable. " class="bbc_link" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">And they succeeded.

And although the carebears had lost literally nothing from the Goons amusing antics, that didn't stop them from raging for hours and hours, and days and days, on the STO forums. 82 pages of pathetic carebears demanding that all Goons be banned from the game. I never thought such a terrible game would bring me so much amusement, without even having to play it.

Essentially Goons tricked Klingons onto their bridges, locked the door and phasered them to death, for some reason STO makes bridges a respawn point so the dead Klingons reappeared on the Goon bridge to be shot again and again and again, for hours, making it impossible to reach the door.

Apparently the ships can be self-destructed, and when they explode, they do AOE damage. So a ton of Goons went to a densely populated area and just kept self-destructing their ships over and over again, killing people with the AOE damage. Then, because there is absolutely no death penalty at all, they could just respawn, and do it again. Over, and over, and over again.

Then later they discovered that you could invite enemies to come to your bridge, and then shoot them. So they got 30 - 40 Goons together on one bridge, and just kept inviting people to board the ship. Then all of the Goons would shoot them at once, killing them instantly. And when they respawned, they would respawn in the exact same place. So they would be killed again. And they would be stuck there, dying every time they respawned, without ever being able to reach the door to leave the ship.

The griefing itself is funny, but not that funny. What really makes this awesome is how everyone blew it way out of proportion, and starting demanding that all Goons be banned for killing them a few times in the game. Why don't people like that just stick to single player games?

That is a really fantastic quote =)

Carebear tears are the principal currency in 0.0 space. They also have a euphoric physiological effect when ingested, making them a popular smuggling item.

Some guy, I think his name is Chock, claims he filed a complaint with the FBI, but not because of the game.  He uses his real picture as his avatar, and apparently he posted a link to his work website.  Some of the goons figured out his name based on the information he posted, then they photoshopped his avatar, and basically just gave him a bunch of shit in the thread, and sent him "threatening" pms.

It always makes me laugh seeing how seriously these people take these games.  That is 2 hours they are whinging about where they were owned on STO.  They clearly should've been some doing social work.

It is.

Pirates and griefers are obviously immoral people in real life. Otherwise how could they kill other people in a game where you're meant to kill other people?
