We're in The Guardian!
« on: February 23, 2010, 01:39:34 PM »
http://www.guardian.co.uk/global/2010/feb/23/flat-earth-society

The story will run in tomorrow's issue of the print Guardian as well.  I did this interview a few weeks ago and wasn't sure anything would come of it, so I didn't really mention much on here.  But it's turned into a full-blown newspaper article!  I clearly didn't change Mr Adams' mind on the topic, but the article seems quite fair -- no misquotes or distortions of what I said.  This is by far the highest-profile coverage we've ever had and I'm very pleased.  Hopefully I did a suitable job of representing the Society.  It's a bit strange being interviewed in person like that..

This was a great article!  He was perhaps a little too biting about it, but ultimately gave you a fair representation of the FES.  I'm going to spread it around a little.  :)

There are a lot more than 60 members, unless he was just counting paying ones.  Still, pretty good!  A little tongue-in-cheek, sure, but I don't think we could have realistically expected a better reaction.  I'm certainly glad that he addressed the theory of this being a troll site or thought experiment.  If this leads to more members, hopefully we'll get a lot less of them saying things like "THIS IS A JOKE, RIGHT?"

Hopefully there will be a number of members on here that will sign up to the Guardian's online pages to counteract the inevitable backlash from "Outraged of Chelmsford" and the like.

I think he was referring to the 'official' members, i.e. FotFE & AMs.

Also, I think it's important that we really make an effort not to drive people off or treat newcomers with excessive disrespect. This is a huge coup for the society, so be on your best behaviour everyone.

I've just reviewed this and realised it could have been taken the wrong way.

By counteract I did not mean, shoot down in flames and, or, take the piss out of interested members of the public.

Given the Guardians readership there will obviously be pipe smoking, tree hugging, pseudo intellectuals that think they alone know the answer to life, the universe and everything, and they need to be treated with kid gloves.

Play nice.

This. I don't think we're going to have the same kind of trouble we've had in the past, but I do anticipate an influx of indignant RE'ers.

Perhaps not, but news aggregators do.  This story is sure to be picked up by many other news sites over the next few days.

That was what what I was referring to as well.  There were over 70 the last time I checked.  I know he was just rounding or whatever, but 70 doesn't seem like any less of a round number to me than 60.  Whatever.  Anyway, time to prepare for the noobs!

Oh, well that's probably to do with when the interview took place - it was a few weeks ago.

You live in Australia right? If so, go to a major newsagents or book store - the Guardian is sold internationally, so you should be able to pick up a copy.

"just as it is against those who think global warming is a hoax and that the dead stalk the Earth as ghosts"

Actually a pretty good line to put in there. He relates us with a much larger group of people who believe in 'ridiculous things'.

This article is good. We should be getting some more people from this hopefully. I'll spread it around my groups of people as much as I can here.

I just read this in the printed Guardian half an hour ago. But given that only commies and libruls read it, I don't think we'll see much of an influx.
