Adding a "sexual harassment" section to the rules
« on: February 07, 2010, 01:09:28 PM »
It sounds kind of silly, but maybe we could add some stuff about "sexual harassment" to the rules against bullying or whatnot.  That could include creepy things like changing avatars, or stuff like that.  No, I'm not trying to "white knight" or anything...it would be more to protect us from trolls than to protect girls from us.

I agree with this. The extensive trollbaiting that's going on with "female" alts is actually rather ridiculous. I am well aware of the irony of myself posting this suggestion, but I'm well past the point of caring for my image.
Here's an explanation for ya. Lurk moar. Every single point you brought up has been posted, reposted, debated and debunked. There is a search function on this forum, and it is very easy to use.

There is a rule that forbids bullying and harassment, but it doesn't apply in Random Musings.

Well, could an exception be made? There is already an exception for racial slurs in CN RM, why not one for  sexual harassment?

Shut up wardogg. You drove away mallory who was a very real person and did nothing against you. I fully support this idea, and think wardogg needs to be nicer, even in RM.

Hmmm.  I thought she was treated better than she would have been, had she been a guy.  Wardogg's always been pretty nice to females.

As for adding another layer of rules, I just don't feel it's needed.

Totally agree. We already have more rules here than we need.  If people can't handle CN they should stay out of it.

It's not just CN that there's a problem with this sexism though.  It bleeds out to the rest of the forum; like with Artilles everyone had the avatars.  It's annoying more than anything.

That honestly was a little too "silly" if you ask me.  Regardless that was just an example of the stuff leaking out of CN.

Artilles was a real girl?

Does it matter?

I'm not trying to play INTERNET WHITE KNIGHT here, but I do think some of the stuff the folks here are doing gets a little out of hand.  The "crying alt" stuff gets really old too, and that often bleeds out of CN too.

As long as people aren't  blatantly attacking other members outside of CN then I don't see the problem.

The idea of making "sexual harassment" rules was something I just thought up of in the spur of the moment, so it might not be too practical to write it into the official rules.  Still, I think that as a community, we have to at least make an effort to stop flipping out the moment a "girl" joins.  This isn't 4chan.  There are in fact a lot of girls on the Internet.  As I said in the quoted thread, we should just try to treat all new members the same, instead of focusing on who they are behind the computer.  Both extremes of overreacting-whether accusing the newcomer of being a trap or making creepy "love threads"-are embarrassing for the site, drive off new members, and encourage other trolls to join in.

This thread, for example, is just pathetic, and I think perfectly illustrates the problem.  The first few responders completely ignored the fact that Artilles wasn't actually a regular here and tripped over themselves to do what she said.  The admin of that forum had to come over to tell us to stop.  Yes, the admin of a fucking World of Warcraft forum needed to lecture us on Internet maturity.  I don't know if the posters trying to "counter-invade" were really thinking with their balls, or were just trolling around with the "white knight" idea, but still...come on.

The admin came over here to tell us not to try hacking the site, and of course it was Artilles who mentioned hacking in the first place. I imagine it was also Artilles who posted the link back to FES for the admin to follow.

I agree that all the I love *whoever* threads are retarted, but as long as they stay in CN then they're no worse than any of the rest of the spam there.  I do think there is a line that gets crossed at times, like when certain members were constantly sexually harassing Muffs (a minor).

Yeah...I must have been looking at Wilmore reprimanding us for "invading" another site.  Still, if Artilles hadn't been claiming to be a girl, the only responses she would have gotten would have been along the lines of "Lol, WOW nerds" and "Who are you again?"

I guess this is where it gets kind of hazy.  Apparently, the rules against "Harassment and Flaming" don't apply in CN RM, as Jack was saying earlier.  Personally, I think that saying certain rules never apply in RM is kind of opening the door to trouble, as you pointed out with the example of Muffz, but that's not really the point of this particular thread.  Anyway, I suppose I'm just giving more of a general suggestion to the members than anything else, as new rules would be awkward, and I don't want to infringe on our RM rights.

As long as people keep it in RM, it's fine. I personally don't feel it's necessary to have too many rules in RM, mainly because the purpose of that forum was to give users a place to post freely without fear of getting into trouble. However, the rule does apply in The Lounge, so users shouldn't hesitate to report to the staff if they feel bullied or harassed in there. New users are advised not to introduce themselves in RM, and I will write that under the forum description.

Now, I think we can safely say that we're quite fed up with the "alt hunting" thing. Accusations do more harm than good for the forums, as others have said. When new users log in for the first time but they look suspicious, don't immediately accuse of them being alts. Welcome them instead. Let the moderators do the work. If the account hasn't been banned yet (still active), it's a message from the staff that said account is not an alt.

By that logic racism is OK if the target isn't that race.   ::)

It's still sexual harassment whether the person is that gender or not.

If you'd all just imagine me repeating what Jack said, except underlined, bolded and littered with exclamation marks, then you'll save me the need to reply. Can we just make the decision as a community to shut the hell up about alts?

Wardogg only did that once. of which he has been forgiven. the last time was well i got fed up, but i am back now..... but as more of a lurker. I hope i will be happier in that position.
as to harassment of females alt, or not, i do think its a problem, but if the rules do not specify in Random Musings i am just gonna have to steer clear of that forum.
but i think its good that they are trying to revamp the different forums. maybe some wont be happy but i just don't care either way anymore.
