Winter Charity Drive 2009 - Society for Abandoned Animals
« on: December 12, 2009, 04:26:14 AM »
It's nearing Christmas again and it's time for the Flat Earth Society's second annual Winter Charity Drive!  Keeping with our one-year tradition, the Society is attempting to raise money for an animal charity.  This is in line with the long-standing tradition of animal welfare and anti-vivisectionist ideals within the Flat Earth movement from prominent Flat Earth advocates such as Lady Blount and Marjory Johnson.  Last Christmas, the Flat Earth Society forums raised about $120 for animal shelters in Chicago and Baltimore. We hope to raise even more this year!

This year, the Flat Earth Society is raising money for the Society for Abandoned Animals, a UK-based animal welfare charity.  The SAA provide food, shelter and veterinary treatment for animals unwanted or abandoned by their owners, and to find them permanent, loving homes.

If you'd like to learn more, visit the Society's fundraising page at: http://www.justgiving.com/theflatearthsociety

I've chosen JustGiving.com (based in the UK) as a fundraising portal.  This is largely because of a government scheme called Gift-Aid which matches charitable donations with an extra 25%.  So a £10 donation becomes £12.50 and then JustGiving takes their fees from that, taking it to a total of about £11.90 -- still £1.90 more than the initial donation even after processing fees and whatnot.  The down-side is that Gift-Aid is only available if you're a UK resident/taxpayer.  Donations from outside the UK don't get that 25% bump.. although when I made my donation, it didn't really check to make sure that I was a UK resident.  It was just a little tick-box you which defaulted to 'Yes'.

I can't seem to embed it in a forums post, but there's a progress meter on the front page now which shows how much money has been raised so far.  Thanks to the anonymous person who already made a donation before I even announced it on here!  Nice!

This is a great cause, and it's really good to see the society doing something for animals in need. I'll make my donation later tonight.

As an aside, I'm reading Timbuktu by Paul Auster at the moment, a novel which features a lonely canine, worried that his master will die and that he'll be left homeless. Great novel, and highly appropriate to boot.

I would donate except the county government deems it necessary to charge me 65 dollars for a court date that I told them beforehand I would not need, nor would I show up to. Over half the ticket I just paid was to pay a judge to sit in a room in case I decided to come in and contest my ticket. /rant

I'll try to donate after my upcoming paycheck.
