I'm sending out press releases on Monday. Any suggestions?
« on: October 31, 2009, 06:04:49 PM »
I'm compiling a big list of everywhere I could send press releases about the Society's reopening.  Places like the New York Times and Wall Street Journal are probably not worth the effort, but there have to be tons of smallalternative newspapers, magazines or online media outlets that might be interested.  If you know of any, please post them here.. preferably with an email address for the editor (or appropriate press release recipient) if you can find it.  And if anyone feels like Digg'ing the the front page, there are convenient Digg/reddit buttons at the bottom of the page.

If anyone has other ideas about how to promote the re-launch of the Society, I'm all ears!

If you want my opinion, I'd definitely send something to the major papers. You never know. The Flat Earth Society is a name that carries weight, and you might be surprised at who'd run a small article (especially on a slow news day).

I've been meaning to ask if you could send it in to my local news station, they are always saying that they want people to send in stuff for them to report about. This is the link to their website http://www.wbng.com/

Send it to some big names, and it might be forwarded to one of their smaller outlets.

Maybe some NPR stations would like this. My station likes to throw in oddball stuff to shake things up.

Since the BBC has published us before, we should try them again. If you'd like, I can get in touch with Brendan O'Neill specifically, since he's researched us already he might be up for covering the press release too.

I suggest sending the information to coasttocoastam.com they cover stuff like this. And they have quite a large following for a overnight show. I am sure they would at least run it as a blurb on the news updates at the start of the show. Good luck.

While it may not be the best place to do so, it has a wide circulation featured in many newspapers all over the country, and considering how buried it tends to be in the newspaper most of the people it would bring would be at least semi literate.

Do you still have his email address?  I looked around on BBC and the online magazine he's editor of and couldn't find anything..

The Daily Show with Jon Stewart.
This may be the best idea yet. His show, along with Colbert's, is most likely to actually run the story, and they get a lot of viewers.

I was thinking of Colbert, but decided that Colbert tends to make fun of every item on the show in some way, whereas Stewart tends to treat things (slightly) more seriously. Plus these shows would be more likely than any others to actually request an appearance on the show.

I was talking about Daniel actually. But I'd totally go to that show to see it in person.

Weekly World News took a sharp decline in quality when they stopped publishing the paper.  The blog is filled with nothing but copypasta and super old internet memes.  Very few fresh and/or interesting articles anymore.

I'd suggest The Onion, but I don't think they run real stories at all.  Everything they've got is completely fabricated.

The Sun is likely to run an article, though.  I don't remember if anyone mentioned them yet.  Also maybe The Register, though they're mostly technology and IT related.

I just sent out about 40 press releases to a wide variety of media outlets.  That means I've got about 40 more to send before I can go eat dinner.  Fingers crossed!
