Earth's Shape and Mass
« on: September 27, 2009, 01:47:16 PM »
however what happens when light is pointed perpendicularly towards the earth?
because in our RE, it would speed up.

Light doesn't speed up in any model. The speed of light (in vacuum) is a universal constant, in accordance with Maxwell's laws of electromagnetism.

Um, yes it does. Ever heard of black holes. and please stop flaunting your status of intelligence. Dude, you don't believe in gravity.

Would this result in red, blue shift then? If the light "accelerating" towards Earth results in blue shift, the how do you account for red shift of stars.

The matter in the stars has fundamentally different properties from that on Earth, causing the line spectra to appear shifted.

Wow, so what exactly are the stars made of?
and how come that stuff has mass, but the earth does not.

Yes I have, funnily enough. Ever heard of relativity?

That is a libelous non-sequitur.

Probably particles with similar, but subtly different, properties to those with which we are familiar.

and how come that stuff has mass, but the earth does not.

The Earth does have mass.

libelous: printing fake information on someone,
and you said before that I was insulting your intelligence by coming up with an alternative theory, aka self righteousness.

Again.  Dude, you don't believe in gravity.

ok, so NOT hydrogen/helium.

when I say mass, I mean it causes the bending of spacetime aka gravity.

Dude, you don't believe in gravity.

This, specifically, is the libelous part of your post. Can you come up with any evidence to support this statement?

Quite correct.

So do I.

Wait, maybe I don't understand your viewpoint.

do you believe or not, that protons, neutrons, and electrons carry mass?

and do you believe the earth to be an infinite plane?

No.

So I assume you believe the earth to be a disk.

in that case, how can things accelerate perpendicularly downward at every point on your earth?
gravity vectors for a single field go to one point in space, so unless this point is infinitely far,  I
cannot see how the vectors can be normal to the surface.

Don't assume with Robosteve. He'll only come back and say "Where did I ever say I believed the earth to be like a disk."

Best walk away in fact.

Something growing by 100 billion tons a day definitely has not fixed shape, especially when it is constantly being weathered and shifted by plate tectonics.

so does it change its shape?
what do you figure is its mass?
I am very very confounded.

Could be anything, across a wide range of orders of magnitude.

I am very very confounded.

I don't see why. It's a very straightforward concept.

I am confused, because you are telling me that you have no clue what the size or shape of the earth is.
This is a little unsettling, because I've never heard of such a belief, and so obviously, I am perplexed.

are you saying the earth has no shape or size, or that you are not sure.

you think the earth is growing and changing shape?
I am asking for an approximate shape. any description will due.
like how deep is it?
does it have holes deep inside?
does it have finite mass currently

If it's growing and shifting every day, that's just your way of worming out of making a map, isn't it?

If it WAS growing and shifting everyday, why do RE maps still explain where everything is?

I'm saying that I am not sure. I don't see sufficient evidence for any one shape to compel me to believe in it, and so I remain agnostic about the shape of the Earth.
