Who are you?
« on: September 15, 2009, 02:20:53 PM »
I was fascinated to come across this site this evening. So fascinated that I registered straight away and have been reading the forums for the last few hours.

I have never personally met someone who believes the earth is flat and I'm amazed that there seem to be so many of you.

I want to say that I am a total REer, but I respect all your views and am impressed with how many of the arguments are articulated.

BUT

Who are you people? I just want to get a scope of the average FE'er. Are you students? If so, what do you study? What do you do for a living, how old are you, where are you from? I just want to know how I've avoided you for so long!

I'll start, I'm from London, doing a MSc in Neurophysiology, I'm 22 years old. You?

I don't believe the FE theory, but i'm 20 and i'm a mechanical engineering student.  Figure this can also be sued so those that believe the FET can get an idea for who we are.

People who have majors involving physics are the ones you want to question why they believe in a flat earth.  Chemistry majors likely won't run into the topic all that often, i know in my chemistry courses at my school i never dealt with that, and the chem majors here don't mention dealing with it when it is brought up.

For privacy reasons, I must limit the information I provide as technically I'm really not supposed to be on this website. However, I will tell you this much. I'm a quirky, free-spirited person who doesn't conform to what other people think I should be. I live my life how I choose. I am jobless by choice but make a nice yearly salary, and spend my days writing poetry, singing, dancing around the house in my underwear, drinking through a swirly straw, and hooking up with attractive individuals at night clubs. My favorite color is blue, and my favorite TV show is The Simpsons. Most people scoff at my lifestyle, but I have more fun in a day than they'll have in years of sitting at a cubicle staring at the clock.

However, everything for me is about to change. I'm getting married in a couple of months and I am so excited! I can't wait to finally start my family. I plan to have as many kids as I possibly can because each child is a blessing and the more flat earthers there are in the world, the better.

I am currently working towards a PHD in literature online.

Oh that's right, because you're an insider for the flat Earth conspiracy (as shown in my sig).

Anyway, it's impossible for someone to be a physicist and think the Earth is flat. Physics wouldn't even exist, these FEers want to make their own set of laws for physics or something. Very immature and pointless thing if you ask me. But this is because they have nothing else going for them in their lives, so this is what they have to resort to.

How do you make a "salary" if you don't have a job?  Did you mean to say "income"?

I agree, that's why i believe in a round earth, it is logical and also as far as physics and a lot of experiments done in physics it shows that a flat earth is impossible.  If a physicist did believe in a flat earth i would have to question him, but a chem major is not as questionable.

Eratosthenes had quite a few experiments that showed strong evidence against a flat earth (i go into that somewhat here:http://www.theflatearthsociety.org/forum/index.php?topic=32278.0).  In fact that thread touches on a few different things that show strong evidence against a flat earth (one of which says that the sun would have to have an extremely large mass, like the sun in the RE model).  Also sighting polaris with a sextant from the north pole will have an angle of 90* and at the equator it will be 0*, again only possible on a round earth.  Stakes in a canal, etc etc

Although there are many other things in physics that wouldn't make sense with a flat earth (general relativity being one of the main ones, again touched on in that thread, also gravity wouldn't exist in a flat earth which causes all sorts of problems, pretty much everything regarding mechanics in physics would be out the window, the only parts of physics that could exist in a flat earth pertain to electricity, thermodynamics, etc etc.).  However i misspoke, it doesn't show that a flat earth would be impossible, it shows that it is highly unlikely.  You can never truly prove something, you can just get very strong evidence against something, and there is a lot of very strong evidence against a flat earth.

I have, i don't think i follow your meaning.  One of the main things regarding general relativity i was talking about is the fact that a 32 mile diameter sun doesn't make sense according to the theory, although there are other parts of the theory that would not make sense with a flat earth.

For observers at all but the most extreme northern and southern regions of the earth on the day of the equinox (coming up in about a week or so), the sun will will rise almost exactly due east and almost exactly 12 hours later the sun will set almost exactly due west.  The round earth model explains this phenomenon quite easily.  Please explain how this phenomenon can occur using the flat earth model.

Fucks sake, will you guys ever stay on topic? You do this to EVERY thread!

I just wanted to know how educated some of the FEers, thats all.

Also, do we have any astrophysicists? Cause if you've dedicated your life to the study of astrophysics, apparently you've just wasted your life!

It's not always that way, my parents have turned to guilt rather than cramming religion down my throat.
