New and has a question.
« on: September 15, 2009, 12:50:04 AM »
So, I've just joined and have been reading the forums, but I'd really like to know...you are serious? You believe the Earth is flat? This isn't just a huge joke to see how ridiculous the arguments can get?

Yes, there are members here that seriously believe the Earth is flat. Some of these members include James, Lord Wilmore, John Davis, Ski, Levee, and 17 November. If you want, you can PM them and get some info about their flat earth beliefs. This website is not a joke.

Yes, this is serious. If you look at things logically, it is clear the earth is flat. In fact, that the earth is a big ball is one of the biggest falsehoods ever to be widely believed in the history of mankind.

Personally, I think this should be moved to angry ranting, just to avoid Questions & Clarification from getting cluttered by all the "are you serious" threads.
If you say that the earth is flat, you are destroying centuries of evolution.

Wait, didn't I read you say you believe in god?
The obvious flaw is that it's completely contrary to observation, and totally preposterous to even hypothesise about.

So, yeah, this should give you a good idea of people you'd enjoy talking to.

Keep this out of the higher forums.

As this isn't a serious question, I think it should be moved out of this section.

Also, I don't know where Tom is, but I haven't seen him lately either. :(

Why must some of us be joking, Thermal? Has the concept of the earth being a globe been so impounded into you that it's hard to even consider that someone might have another viewpoint?

Why haven't I been brainwashed, then?  Why hasn't anyone I know?

Weird thing is, we were taught to question what we're told.  Hmmm....a weird brainwashing tactic, telling kids not to just listen and believe....

That's not what schools teach at all. Schools teach you to conform to rigid standards without questioning them. On a test, you fill in the blanks. If your answer is not exactly the same as the one on the answer key, it is counted against you. Schools teach conformity.

Yes but we aren't just told: "the earth is round, let's move on." We are taught how the earth is round, and all the sciency stuff that goes with it.

Can we please stop with the brainwashing comments? They are getting very irritating.

Every science class i've been in, from middle school through ap classes and through college even, has taught me to question results and question theories.  In fact, teachers that have taught me this tell me to try to disprove theories through multiple tests, i know many scientists that experiment the same way.  Rather than setting out to test something to prove it right you set out to try to disprove it, and if you can't disprove it after multiple tests then that is strong evidence that the theory is right.  Most of the tests i've seen done here have only had trying to prove a flat earth right, rather than trying to disprove it, and when you do that bias can easily mud up the results.

Uhh...no.  Again, I don't know what was wrong with your school.  My teachers have, several times, accepted answers that were different, so long as they made sense.

Oh yeah, and when you're filling in answers about science?  That's because they're quizzing you on that theory.  Duh.  If you did it differently, you did it wrong, since that's now how it is in that theory.

And again, we're told daily "don't just believe things, question them".

How many Jews did Adolf Hitler kill in World War 2?
Answer on answer key: 6 million.
Answer from free thinking student: It's unclear; the only estimate, 6 million, comes from the Jewish religion itself, not actual statistics. Also, Hitler did not cause any deaths alone, but rather had the support of the majority of German citizens, without which such a tragedy would not have been possible.

Free thinking student: Wrong.

It was just an example. Not every answer is set in stone, but rather there are a variety of different opinions and viewpoints. If you hold one of these, you must suppress it and conform in order to get the answer right.

The thing is that it was a very poor example.  The only time multiple choice questions are used is when there is a definite answer, like who delivered the Gettysburg address, what is the square root of 64, find the preposition in the following sentence.  They never have an open ended question like that in a multiple choice test, at least i've never seen one in my time at school.  Hell at my college none of the professors ever use multiple choice tests.

A better example would be "approximately how many jews died during the holocaust" and then the answer would be 6 million or whatever the figure is, i don't know it off the top of my head.  That is the type of question you would see on a multiple choice test, not the open ended and false question you put forth.  Your logic is flawed.

To say that students are not free thinking simply because they will answer a question that has a definite answer makes no sense.  Just because you question one generally accepted theory does not make you free thinking, thinking like how i mentioned earlier, where you question theories and try to prove them wrong does.  You're not as elite as you think.
