the church, spreading the word of god on earth

or

christopher columbus, the man responsible for the deaths of millions of native americans.

its a no brainer, really.

The earth is flat. No drunken genocidal spanish sailer can disprove this universal  truth.

Christopher Columbus most certainly not coin the ideal that the world is round.

I believe the Christian Church no longer promotes the flat Earth belief.  They'd probably get...I don't know...very few people going to mass.

Drunken Spaniards are actually quite versatile despite popular opinion.  I would not underestimate them so easily as that.

Many religions don't promote the flat Earth belief because science has taught us the other way.  The bible states that the Earth is flat because the bible was created back when there was little technology and the flat Earth seemed the most logical.  Now, with our technology, it is no longer the most logical idea.  Especially since it's been proven that the Earth is, indeed, round...

Some people would flat (pun?) out disagree with that last statement.  I would go into more detail about this experiment or other proof.

most of the people during his time believed in a round earth.  in western literature, you don't see flat earth until all the way back to ptolemy of ancient greece

After recent "discrepancies" by certain Religious parties, I'd have to say I'd go with Christopher Columbus.....
I mean, his poor form with the American Indians has a few similarities with a certain President and Prime Ministers of modern day (whom we continue to elect), so judging retrospectively isnt entirely relevant...

the chruch rarely promoted the idea of a flat earth, that is merely a fabrication of many romantic novelists. What it did promote was that the Earth, and namely Jerusalem, was the centre of the universe. Everything else was immaterial. The reason galelio was imprisoned was that he suggested that the earth wen't round the sun, and that the earth was not the centre of the universe.
