New Experiment - input welcome .. please contribute

Well I've got some free time for the next month. I still have my telescope and camera. I also have access to a D80 which has 10MP instead of 6 like my D70s.

Well, any FE's like to suggest an optical test? Any more view across bodies of water. I'm aware some FEs were concerned shots across the ocean aren't the same as shots across a like. I can do lakes though.
What about stars, planets, the moon? The Sun? I have a solar filter so I can image the Sun directly.

Some FEr could image an extraterrestrial body and we could compare images.

Any celestial body must be visible from Perth, Western Australia. I'm not driving to Darwin to try and see Polaris.

Anyone like to get the ball rolling?

Some "star-trail" pictures would be cool, as they would have been generated by an actual member of this community.

Are they circular?

Is the compass bearing of the point of rotation due south?

Can you image The Celestial Equator where you are?

I can then try and ask my pal in Sydney to get some similar images from where he is - far away to the east - and we can compare results.

Yeah the real issue is for a FEr to contribute ideas. Otherwise they end up looking at the results and saying "oh but you didn't do it properly".

Might be able to clarify who are just trolling and those who can put in some effort.

Exactly. And I'm fine with the burden of proof being on me as long as they define the parameters of the experiment. That way any results provided can't be ignored.

Oh, I love this!  Great idea, dyno.  I'd be surprised if you get anyone like Tom Bishop (he has a nice telescope, but he thinks camera mounts are the work of the devil).

Agreeing on the setup of the experiment is the beginning of peer review as part of The Scientific Method, and should allow the FE'ers to dictate what conditions they will accept BEFORE the results come, so that they cannot then complain about those conditions AFTER they don't like the results.

I almost expect this thread to get shunted to some other category.  I hope it doesn't.  I may not post here anymore, but I'll be watching.

Or are the only people proposing experiments around here Round Earthers?

If you need some support, or just someone to verify your experiments give me a shout. I do believe that you posted some pics earlier of Rotto. Which means that you can't be too far from me. That way you will have some support for your results.

Well I have to say it's been a pretty poor showing from the FE's.

May I take silence as a sign that none of you have any idea of an experiment that could be performed? None of you care strongly enough to convert some REs? None of you actually believe in a FE?

It's basically the last experiment you did. Observe an object really far away with a telescope. Does the object disappear under the horizon? If not, the earth must be flat.

Ah. So you really want me to perform the exact experiment as I had before except lowering the telescope to 8 inches above the water. I think the results of my last effort are sufficient.

Star trails over the south pole are possible.  I can try for polaris if people would like. I don't have a lens wide enough to cover the whole sky. I can take multiple shots. Want me to image star trails pointing north?

I can image a specific area of the sky.
No one wants me to image the Sun? Moon? Planets? Galaxies? Nebula?

If you could do this at two or more different longitudes ...

Then you could determine if the compass bearing of The South Celestial Pole is always due south.

If it is, then it is likely that The South Celestial Pole is located on a sphere and sits above the Earth's South Geographical Pole ...

Rather than being on a rotating disc-like star-system which sits above an arbitrary point out near The Ice Wall.

I'm not sure what planets are visible to you at the moment. I have a program called stellarium on my computer which tells me what i can see from my particular location;  Saturn is visible at the moment, not sure about other planets.

I think Venus is always a good subject as it can usually be seen as a crescent (no way!) and personally I'd like a good photo of a crescent, half or gibbous moon for my desktop - something which shows the mountains and crater rim shadows.

I strongly suspect that the Flat Earthers around here are more interested in winning a good debate about their theories than carrying out any actual experimentation (science).

They seem to prefer to try and refute our Round Earth evidence (e.g. trans-global radio waves) rather than generate any Flat Earth evidence of their own.

Edit: and it is not for me to criticise this preference as they are free to engage however they see fit.

Another cool experiment would be to repeat Rig Navigator's "restore" esperiments with a nice, powerful zoom lens (i.e. with no, huge and intermediate magnification).

They were inconclusive - no restoration within experimental error - last time:

I've had a similar reaction from asking creationists to do experiments and start acting like a science. They arent a science so they can't do it.
