Humber Bridge towers

When I was a young whippersnapper Civil Engineer back in the late 70's I worked on the Humber Bridge, which,at the time, was the longest span between towers in the world. Towards the end of the project the engineering team was asked to complete an "as built survey" of the structure.
The north and south towers are supposed to be 36mm further apart at the top than they are at the bottom due to the curvature of the earth. That's bollocks that is,they're within 5mm of being the same distance apart top and bottom, leaning towards each other if anything!
The official website won't tell you that though.

I love flat stuff me, and vertical stuff, and parallel stuff

perhaps they were built on uneven terrain or the earth is flat

So.... is this bridge going to fall down because the towers don't point the way they were supposed to, or is there no real need for such measures?

The towers were built very accurately to be as near as possible dead vertical once the load of the bridge deck was applied. It's only by calculation using R/E theory that they should be 36mm apart.
The survey showed that the towers were truly vertical (within a very small tolerance) but it also showed that they were not further apart at the top than the bottom.

It's flat, it's flat I tell you !!        I love it when things are flat

Not Harbour Bridge by the way (presume you mean Sydney) that was built in 1932 by the same design engineering company as Humber Bridge which is in the UK.
