New Punctuation Marks
« on: May 20, 2009, 09:08:25 PM »
I theorize that internet slang like LOL and WTF will eventually turn to punctuation marks. Lol will be a modified '!' sense it entails excitement but more specifically humor excitement. WTF will, of course, be a modified '?' sense it evokes question yet a more surprised question. Am I right?

If I was asked to imagine a perfect deity, I would never invent one that suffers from a multiple personality disorder. Christians get points for originality there.

Lol has already lost its original meaning, people use it as more of a polite chuckle, or as excitement, so I see what you mean, but I doubt we'll include Fuck in a punctuation mark.

I think WTF has already been summed up with the interrobang

Which was usde in place of '!?' as in "I just ate a what!?"

hmm this is close, but not sufficient. We still need lol punctuated! And they need a regular space on the keyboard.

But I almost like saying interrobang more than wtf.

You want a better mark than an interrobang‽

You could always use the Irony Mark for lol because how often do we use 'lol' when we laugh out loud anymore?

I like ?! better than !?.  It can also be modified to the correct proportions of surprise and questioning.  The interrobang is somewhat useless.

As for lol: :D  There you go.

The way I see it, punctuation is used to recreate speech effects, so I'm not sure 'WTF?' or 'lol' wil become 'punctuation'. I think it's much more likely that 'lol' will become a spoken phrase in English.

But I've noticed that people start putting lol at the end of their sentences. I can see it being sucked in by grammar since its not really part of the sentence but defines how the sentence should be read as.

I do see where you're coming from, but I just feel it's more likely that people will start saying 'lol' in everyday speech than using it becoming an official kind of punctuation. I mean, I know people who say 'lol' ironically in real life, and the way I see it it's only a matter of time before it becomes a word. Becoming punctuation... I just think it's more of a stretch. It can't be both, and I think it'll become a word first.

I wonder how it will be perverted. Will there one day be a word such as "eloll" as people get lazy and slowly combine the spoken letters, or if people will start to pronounce it, "lawl" being the spelling.
