Captain Trips?
« on: April 25, 2009, 05:07:59 PM »
It's started. Stephen King predicted it in the 70s novel 'The Stand' and now it looks like we're seeing the beginnings of the deadly pandemic in Mexico and California.See here for more details on the Swine Flu epidemic.

This seems like another one of those annoying things like SARS and the bird flu. It will blow over in a couple months. *Knocking on wood*

Actually this is more reminiscent of the flue pandemic that swept the world killing millions. It effects the healthy adults more than the elderly or the small kids. Same MO. It also has a very high death rate for a flu. I say brace for epic.

The spanish flu epidemic wasn't even respiratory transmittable I believe. Neither was the avian flu or any of these other "epidemics".

I'm not saying this will be a shit storm, but there is more than a distinct possibility this will go horrible wrong if we don't act. Then again we have this comic illustrating the perils of constantly closing the borders at any threat. Get the reference and I love you.

It only seems to be the Mexicans dying even though people have been getting it all over the place so maybe the Mexicans are either just really wussy and weak or they got some other disease going around at the same time too.

Or they have had hundreds of cases for longer periods. We simply need more cases and longer for people to get sick enough to die. Just wait.

About 6% of the people in Mexico who get it die, 0% here. I'm blaming they're shitty health care.

No, but they were certainly rich on average compared to the mexicans. In the U.S. you can't be denied from a hospital. In mexico they usually require cash up front.

I'm not really worried too much about this.  The media tends to blow these things out of proportion.  Not saying I would want to be in Mexico right now, but still......

Lol. I've heard one thing from the media and it was erring on the ignorant side of caution. They were talking about pig flu, as in the normal kind that you get from a pig. What is spreading is a lot worse than the media has the balls to even suggest.

It'll either be contained quickly or do a quick burn across the continents. The death rate seems small with the number of cases, just wait until it's infected rates start matching that of the regular flu.

(P.S. don't use wikipedia on this subject, 4chan is in control of that page)

It's the rate at that it's got into different countries that worries me.
If you read "The Hot Zone" you'd understand that that's to be expected.

Huh, guess I've underestimated it then.  I don't know much about it so I was just assuming it was not as bad as it sounded.  I'm still not too worried, though.

Its already burning across the continents. Europe, the middle east and that part of the world in the area that doesn't exist
