Virus not detected.
« on: April 10, 2009, 07:53:44 AM »
I seem to have a supervirus on my first computer.
I am running Windows XP Professional; yes this computer is old.

It is invisible to Norton Antivirus software with latest and greatest updates.
It disables navigation via explorer windows. (I can still navigate by typing in the address bar)
It disables anything that uses those navigational paths, like disk defragmenter.
It redirects every hyperlink to an ad page. (For both Internet Explorer and Firefox)
It can survive formatting and reinstalling windows.

I'm out of my league here. Does anyone have experience with this shit?

I still want this computer functional along with my new computer.

O.o. Actually, I know how that is. My computers ancient too and I refuse to destroy it, because it can still hold media.

I say, download a shitload of different antivirus and spyware bull and run them all. Sometimes one doesn't get everything. I hear Kapersky or w/e it is is pretty good.

Er, my usual solution for Explorer viruses is to download Litestep, but it doesn't look like thats going to help you...

Norton Antivirus

I think this is a bigger problem. But seriously,

It can survive formatting and reinstalling windows.

Are there any peripheral storage devices to which it might have spread, and through which it might recontaminate your computer after reinstallation? USB flash drives, external hard drives, network drives, perhaps even a floppy disk (and shame on you if that is the case)? Try disconnecting all peripherals (including your network connection, just to be on the safe side), then formatting and reinstalling Windows - or perhaps you could try a decent OS while you're at it.

I turned to Norton after Malwarebytes, Sheild Deluxe 2009, and Bit Defender failed me. I'm about to try optimisticcynic's recommendation of Avast.

For the format, I disconnected everything external except my ethernet cord to a password protected network, and I unplugged all but one hard drive which had the operating system. After Installing and updating antivirus stuff, I simply plugged in my other hard drives and scanned them without opening a single file and started a deep scan. Unless I have a misconception, viruses don't run unless their host file is opened or run (none of the other drives have operating systems on them). I still have a lot of stuff on the secondary hard drives that I really can't afford to lose.

At this point, I am wondering if I was mistaken about viruses not needing any kind of activation, or if perhaps the nasty little fucker buried itself into my BIOS. Either way, I don't know the next step... assuming there is one.

Did your system run fine before you plugged in the other hard drives?

It's possible that the virus embedded itself into the BIOS or is located in the MBR itself.

Download a linux distro. Format the drive with a 32 pass zero out method. Then try reinstalling Windows.

If that doesn't help, flash your BIOS. Download whatever utility you need and the most recent version of your BIOS.

If that doesn't help, then you're pretty fucked.

I didn't notice a problem, but stupidly enough I didn't check. It was inconceivable to me at the time, that the virus could be so sophisticated.

Avast found 4 infected files during boot and all were the "(Letter of Drive):\autorun.inf"
And I am quite impressed that is managed to find the files that so many others didn't. It deleted them all, and continued to boot up only to freeze on a blank black screen. I restarted it again and it loaded windows fine. However the redirecting hyperlinks are still here.
Fortunately, my windows navigation is back... this is more important to me since it is harder to work around.  ;D

While typing this Avast came back to a new message saying it has detected a virus in the operating memory. It wants me to restart and run the same scan it just did. I might as well. I'd prefer to stop wiping things over again if this has a chance of working.  :P

I hope to be back shortly. Thanks everyone.

Excellent news. It seems my links are working now, and as long as I remain symptom free I'm happy.  ;D
Too bad I paid for three years of Norton.  :-X

Thanks a billion everybody who offered advice.

I honestly have no idea how it missed that. :(

I agree with Wardogg for once. I started using Avast! about six months ago, and so far I'm happy.
Here's an explanation for ya. Lurk moar. Every single point you brought up has been posted, reposted, debated and debunked. There is a search function on this forum, and it is very easy to use.

McAfee came with my computer. Attempting to remove it from within Windows proved impossible. There was no uninstallation executable, and if I tried to delete C:\Program Files\McAfee, Vista would confirm a few times that I really wanted it gone and then tell me it couldn't do it. The only way I could get rid of it was to boot Ubuntu (once I got a dual boot set up) and type rm -r '/media/OS/Program Files/McAfee' in the terminal.

Yeah well I have been using my computer for a good 3 years without a virtual condom. I figured being smart about things would defeat the purpose of tracking down good anti virus software, and I was right for that entire time. But Peer Guardian failed me just once, and I hadn't even heard of the good alternatives before coming here. All is well again, and I'm better off now cause I can hump the internet all I want.
