I've seen some people recommend movies made by Wes Anderson (royal tannebaums, darjeeling limited, etc.). No one has mentioned my favorite one of his called Bottle Rocket.

Doesn't have the same big actors.

You mean like Luke and Owen Wilson, who are the lead roles in Bottle Rocket?

I can't be bothered to read the whole thread to see if this has been mentioned, but the movie Adulthood is a great film most people haven't heard of.

I have a question. Does anyone here know of any movies that instantly hooked them? I'm talking the kind of movie that was never that big but you watched it and it was instantly one of your favorites.

Some of mine were Donnie Darko, thank you for smoking to a lesser extent, boondock saints.

Equilibrium, Event Horizion, and Cube come to mind.  i'm sure there are others.

[edit]Oh, and Bubba Ho-Tep and My Name is Bruce, but those are both given for any Bruce Campbell fan.

[edit2]I should mention Kevin Smith's drama movies are surprisingly really good.  I put off watching Good Will Hunting for a long time, and when I finally did I was very pleasantly surprised.

Event Horizion
One of the scariest films I have ever seen.

My mother didn't like that one for some reason. She said it was unrealistic. Then again, her understanding of physics is so rudimentary that she was probably referring to the idea of warped spacetime as being realistic.

Event Horizion
One of the scariest films I have ever seen.

It scared the hell out of me when I first saw it years ago, but I recently bought the DVD and watched again and it wasn't that scary, but still a pretty cool film.  I wish they would have stuck more of the previous crew's torture.  They had filmed a lot more but ended up cutting most of it to keep it marketable enough.

I would like some suggestions on non-mainstream movies. They can be old or current, film festival, whatever. Just good movies that never got big money advertising, maybe never even got released in theatres.

I want to broaden my horizons and watch some varying stuff.....

thanks.

 * If you like old B & W movie classics, try "Christina" or maybe called "Queen Christina," a 1933 MGM movie starring Greta Garbo as Queen of Sweden.

BUT IF YOU PREFER
* A cult classic - see "Sid and Nancy" - 1986 about the band the "Sex Pistols"

BUT IF YOU PREFER
* a song and dance movie- See "Silk Stockings" a remake of the non-musical "Ninotchka" (Garbo).  The remake is a 1957 MGM movie starring Cyd Charisse and Fred Astaire.  Better than his normal partner Ginger, & easier on the eyes too.

BUT IF YOU PREFER
* the bizarre- see "Videodrome", a 1983 Canadian psychological thriller starring James Wood and Deborah Harry.  Not a big hit, not well-known, but also not good- unless you like the bizarre.

BUT IF YOU PREFER
* dark and satirical- see "Clockwork Orange"- a 1971 film directed, produced and co-written by Stanley Kubrick.  Not only dark & satirical, but a futuristic horror film that got mixed reviews.  Some said it was mediocre, and others thought it was fantastic.

I never understood the term "cult classic". Wtf does that mean? is it a classic made by a cult? or a cult that's classic?

It has a following like a cult.

"Cult classics" do not necessarily have to be a cult or be about a cult- but their following is kinda like a cult.  Like a groupie except, the fans of cult classics are usually limited.  The films are eccentric and controversial, and often fail to achieve fame among mainstream audiences, but yet their fans are highly devoted, specific group of people.  Another type of cult classic film would be anything that Andy Warhol did.  He used Edie Sedgwick in a few of his films, and they were filmed at a place which I think, if I remember was called "The Factory".  Late 60's / early 70's.  He was a weirdo anyhow.  Cult classics usually refer to movies, but can refer to music as well.

On the otherhand, the "Sid and Nancy" movie (not by Warhol) is not that bad - not all the sex stuff that Andy Warhol had in his movies.  Sid and Nancy had some sex stuff, drug stuff, and self-destruction kinda stuff, based on a former band member of the "Sex Pistols" - which they are still around.  They are a English punk rock band.

A few of my fave movies that are a bit obscure:

Anything by Don Hertzfeldt, the man is a genious. Last 2 films he made (Everything will be OK) and (The meaning of Life) Ive watched about a dozen times, and each time i still come away with something different.
http://www.bitterfilms.com/

Anything by Hayao Miyazaki (maybe not so obscure, but some of his early films are less well known)
http://www.rottentomatoes.com/celebrity/hayao_miyazaki/

A clockwork Orange, Great film on multiple levels
http://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/clockwork_orange/

Attack of the Killer Tomatoes, A film so bad its fun to watch if only for the MST3K shinnanigans that can ensue. Dont watch if you want something serious
http://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/attack_of_the_killer_tomatoes/

Evil Dead/Army of darkness, Bruce Campbell creamy goodness. What can i say, im gay for Bruce Campbell. The man described as the heterosexual cure for impotence.
http://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/evil_dead/
http://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/army_of_darkness/

Moon (recomended by a friend) Havent seen it yet, so i dont know anything about it.
http://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/10009075-moon/

Enemy Mine, Yeah, this one is kinda a matter of taste. But its always been one of my faves, even with its flaws

Then if you like Bruce Campbell in movies - check him out in a new series called "Burn Notice".  In the U.S. it airs on USA network or channel; it's on basic cable.  He plays Sam, and helps the lead character played by Michael Westen try to return to the CIA, but currently has a burn notice on him.  Spy TV show kinda thing - but better than James Bond movies at times.
