Rowbothams restorer telescope?
« on: February 27, 2009, 07:40:22 PM »
I'm just wondering seeing as I've seen reference to this thing numerous times.  Is this a real mystical telescope that used to exist at one time, possessed only by Rowbotham, but is now lost forever in the river of time, or was this just an average run of the mill newtonian microscope he had that one could purchase or construct themselves?
Also, since I'm kind of new to this site, I guess a hello is in order.  I find this site quite enlightening, and hope that all of my questions may be answered.
(Unfortunately, I doubt all of my questions will ever truly be answered, because I have a lot of them, many of which are philisophical in nature and have no answer)
I don't know what you're implying, but you're probably wrong.

There was nothing unique about Rowbotham's telescope.

Then why can't I use my school's uber powerful telescope to see the sun after it has set?

By all means try.

By all means try.

I'm fairly sure if it could one of the professors or students who have used the telescope for years would have noticed by now that they were able to see things after they went below the horizon.  They tracked the moon the entire night of the last lunar eclipse, surely somebody would've noticed?

Plus shouldn't I be able to use my hobby telescope to at least see them a short time after they set?  I guarantee you I can not.

Typically one points the telescopes toward the sky, not the horizon. By all means, attempt to view the receding sun with the university's telescope and let us know what you find.

I've watched a lunar eclipse on my own telescope and it was something like 6am, the moon was setting while finishing the eclipse.  No difference between its position on my telescope vs position from the naked eye.  Same can be said for binoculars.

Telescopes are not always pointed at the night sky.  Believe it or not, telescopes can be used for terrestrial observations as well.  For example, in big cities, telescopes are typically pointed at neighbor's unblocked bedroom windows

It was very real. Rowbotham was able to restore ships hulls using his telescope, it was buried with Rowbotham at Alexandria.

Neeman, it was nice that you welcomed him to the FES.  It would have been even nicer if you had answered his question about the telescope, however.

EnigmaZV, Rowbotham didn't say much about the various telescopes that he used over the years other than to say that they were of "sufficient magnification".  Since he never quantified that description, we can only speculate.

I'm not a Rowbotham fanboy. I didn't answer the question because I do not know the answer. I don't see why you're putting the onus on me; you post here just as much as I do.

You could have just as easily said that to EnigmaZV when you welcomed him aboard.

Work where? I don't have anything to do with Spotify.
You see, only people from the UK can create a Spotify account for free these days.
So I can't create one, and no one else in the world besides UK, unless you use a web proxy of course.
The reason I ask is if I needed an account, could you create on for me?

Sorry, it's just you were being very vague, and they have a Stockholm department, so I started connecting dots. Anyway, I actually live in Ireland, so I probably can't. I actually really need to get to bed now, as I have to be up at 6am tomorrow (train), but if you like I'll try in the morning once I get on campus, and I can PM you to let you know if it worked. Sound good?

That would be great. If you did see a register form when you visited that link, you sure can create an account.
Test it tomorrow and let me know. You should really try Spotify though. It's a huge library of music for free,
and you can play it directly from the application.
