Wifi on gNewSense
« on: February 24, 2009, 02:04:57 PM »
Does anybody know how to install Madwifi on gNewSense? (I got it after I tried to install Elive and failed miserably, getting GRUB error 17 no matter what I tried, and that was the only remotely famed distro that I either hadn't tried or that was unlikely to work) It worked fine on Ubuntu, but in a massive display of freefaggotry, I can't get get it in Synaptic on gNewSense because it it's patented. Please, I only have half an hour left before I either have to go and get the charger, and I just saw the topless Moony pics. I can't leave the computer!
No but I'm guess your what? 90? Cause you just so darn mature </sarcasm>

I could never get WiFi working on gNewSense. It's one of the reasons I'm thinking of switching back to Ubuntu.

Damn. If you have a laptop and can't get wifi to work, you are turning your machine into a mobile brick. And you consider your OS usable?

It does work with WiFi. Just not my wireless card. The Linux kernel has built-in support for this wireless card, but since it's not free software, Linux-libre does not.

Oh, you're trying to compile it yourself? Put it in /usr/src, open the terminal and cd to that directory, then type the following commands:

./configure
make
sudo make install

That's pretty much the basic way of compiling stuff, some applications require a bit more though.

Yes. So on your machine you have no wifi with that card. Therefore bricking a laptop.

I also have a dual core processor, of which Linux-libre will only run one CPU.

Okay, I've done it now, I just didn't know the command to move files from the terminal.

Now I get stuck at "make", it just gives this: cd: 1: can't cd to /lib/modules/2.6.24-19-386/build
Makefile.inc:66: *** /lib/modules/2.6.24-19-386/build is missing, please set KERNELPATH.  Stop.

The original gnu philosophy came up because they were being inconvenienced in some way and wanted to fix it. Anyone using it now runs into many more inconveniences that they may or may not be able to fix. After all these years I say it is time that you slacken the rules.
