It's just an epithet, Dread or Great are also used.
Quote from: Abdul Alhazred
That is not dead which can eternal lie.
And with strange aeons even death may die.

He is most certainly alive. In fact it was he that placed the other Old Ones in sleep before him.

What is the use of an epithet which is antonymous to its subject's actual qualities?

"Dead" is metaphorical and does not apply as it does with us. Mere human words cannot adequately describe Great Cthulhu's current state.

Metaphorical for what? "Alive" and "dead" together describe the state of everything in existence and are mutually exclusive; by the very definition of "dead" as something which is not alive, there is nothing in a state which is neither alive nor dead, nor is there anything in a state which is both alive and dead. If Cthulhu is alive, he is not dead; if he is dead, he is not alive and therefore cannot sleep.

Alive and dead designate a very small portion of our planet. Most things are neither. Or both.

Are you alive?

As a complete entity, yes.

Most things are neither.

Example?

A stone.

A stone is dead, if one defines "dead" to mean "not alive". In any case, a stone is not alive, and therefore cannot sleep.

Or both.

Example?

The comatose.

The comatose are not dead.

Yet you are composed of things that are not alive. Your finger nails are dead, your hair is dead. When you get down small enough, every living part is made up of non living parts.

Death is a human concept; if you wish to apply it in a way that does not apply to humans, do not refer to it as "death".

Obviously. Those things cannot sleep the way the overall (living) entity can.

It is the closest word in our limited language that applies. Of course, the Old Ones are able to describe it perfectly in their own tongue, but any attempt by a human to do so results in insanity and eventual suicide.

Why not invent a new human word to mean "death as it applies to Cthulhu"? We have 26 letters in the alphabet; surely a permutation of such letters may be found that is distinguishable from all others which are currently in use both in written and verbal communication?
