Poll

Is gun control an effective means of reducing violent crime

Yes.  People cannot be trusted with guns for any reason.  If the population is not armed, then there are less guns in the hands of criminals.  As a result there will be less violent crime
Yes.  But only for gun crimes, it will have no effect on other types of violent crimes
Yes and no.  It may reduce crimes commited with guns, but criminal will then resort to other weapons such as knives.  Other violent crimes will increase
No.  Criminals will get guns despite the law, it will have no effect on crime
No.  Not only will criminals ignore this law and get guns illegally, but such laws will make for easier victims since they will not be armed.  Crime rates will increase

Good thing we have normal mental health care and I can't get to a gun here, so no kids of mine will be shot, either by me or by anyone else!

If you had good mental health care, clearly kids being shot wouldn't be a worry and thus guns would be legal. Since yourself and everyone you know in your country apparently wouldn't be able to resist the chance to shoot children, none of you can be trusted with any sort of weapon.

Black and white.

Well my AR-15 lower arrived at the local gun store.  The wait for a background check is over 99 hours.  When I bough a gun 2 months ago it took 30 minutes and I was at a gun show.

I sincerely hope it will never be used to kill a bunch of kids.
That is an ignorant thing to say.

Not really. Considering the vast amounts of issues one could argue, I would say everyone on this site has at least one stance I agree with. The Earth is flat, though, and Sokarul will have to come to terms with that eventually.

Why would you even want an AR-15? I'd be interesting in firing one, but not owning one.

How would a gun with no barrel, no firing pin, and no trigger shoot a round of ammunition?

Do fire one and then see if you still want to ask that question.

Let's address this issue backwards. Let's say that a new drug is invented. It causes dopamine rushes comparable to meth, but without the side effects. Unfortunately, it occasionally causes death rays to shoot uncontrollably from some people's eyes. This does not adversely affect you, but it kills anyone they touch unless they also are users of this drug, who have a 50% survival rate. Should the drug be legal?

I'd rather own an airsoft rifle. At least then I could use it for it's purpose without killing people/animals.

No, but some people need guns. It's not the same.

I've fired a few guns on a firing range, and I can honestly say I don't want to own any of them.

Dumb comparison.

Lets say the street in front of your house has a speed limit of 35 miles an hour. Highschool kids are caught driving down your street at 70 mph.  Should the speed limit be lowered to 25 mph to stop kids driving down the street at 70 mph?

It depends.  Will the death rays kill zombies?

Seriously, I see what you are trying to say, but it is a very bad analogy.

This is true, but I don't think they have any more power than the tobacco people or the engineered agriculture people.  They all run the government.

That is such a terrible analogy that I'm not even sure if it deserves to be called an analogy at all.

This one is even worse.

Let's also say that crazy people are too crazy to get guns illegally.

Should we outlaw guns to keep crazy people from getting guns legally?

A boom stick has a barrel and a firing pin.

Not to mention that it hardly constitutes a gun, as it can only be fired point blank.  Its more like an exploding spear.

I wrote that badly. I meant to add in that it only caused death rays if you misused it. If you use it responsibly you're fine.

I don't get the argument that there should be more mental health management as opposed to more gun control.

Why not have both?

The argument is that gun control doesn't work and is against the constitution and makes it more difficult to defend yourself.

If you really believe the only thing you'll be able to shoot if you were handed an AR15 were people or animals, then it's probably a good thing you don't have one.

Perhaps you are in need of some of that mental healthcare.

The purpose of an AR15 is to fire bullets.  I use mine for inanimate targets.  What would you use one for?
