Is gun control an effective means of reducing violent crime

Yes.  People cannot be trusted with guns for any reason.  If the population is not armed, then there are less guns in the hands of criminals.  As a result there will be less violent crime
Yes.  But only for gun crimes, it will have no effect on other types of violent crimes
Yes and no.  It may reduce crimes commited with guns, but criminal will then resort to other weapons such as knives.  Other violent crimes will increase
No.  Criminals will get guns despite the law, it will have no effect on crime
No.  Not only will criminals ignore this law and get guns illegally, but such laws will make for easier victims since they will not be armed.  Crime rates will increase

How many bayonet related killings occur every year?  I am having trouble finding even one through Google.  So, the bayonet lug was added to the Brady Bill for no good reason, other than being something else that they could throw in.  That shows how much research went into the items that were banned.

1) Yes, you are. You're pretending that the ban on automatic weapons is the only variable which could have had an effect on crime rates between 1995 and 2011, which is patently untrue.
So back to what I said about anti gun people not knowing anything about guns. Automatic weapons were banned in America in 1986.  I could go out an buy a full auto gun after all the checks and the $200 tax stamp but it would have been made in or before 1986. No way else. But we are not talking about "automatic weapons", we are talking about assault weapons.  Please look them up. I sure hope you do not think American run around with machine guns.

2) A) Every single one? There's never been a mass murderer who didn't have serious mental issues evar?
    B) Straw man. I never made that claim. Mental healthcare in the U.S. sucks and clearly needs to be reformed. I'm not debating that.
I didn't mean to put all had, I meant that someshooters in the past and the recent shooters had mental problems. I don't know about every shooting. The DC sniper may not have had mental problems.

1) Probably the fact that they turn your ranged weapon into a ranged/melee weapon, but I'm far from an expert on such things.
It's cosmetic. No one uses bayonets to kill these days. No one uses the grande attachment either.  One of the main criticisms of the last assault weapons ban was that it was a cosmetic ban.
Quote
2) You've yet to demonstrate that assault weapon bans are not useful. Petitio principii.
Except for the stats that showed the last ban was worthless. Or that Connecticut has an assault weapons ban and the shooting still took place. Look up the states that have assault weapons bans and see what the ban really is.  You can still have assault weapons.   Ask Californians about the Bullet Button.

Incorrect
All the talk about an assault weapons ban after the Aurora shooting quickly died out. He used one, yet it took this one to get a senator to sponsor a bill.  Bandwagon

1) Yes, we will protect ourselves from government tanks and drones with assault rifles and a few clips of ammunition. This isn't the 18th century anymore. The weapons used by the military are far too technologically advanced and expensive for civilian use. We lost the ability to defend ourselves against our own military a long time ago and gun laws aren't going to change that.
So we should forfeit our liberty because we are scared of the government?  Also once again, assault weapons take magazines.  Some guns do use clips but these clips load internal magazines.  Watch less mass media.

(2) As for the Pearl Harbor thing, please provide evidence for your outrageous claims.
I don't have any. That is why I added or so they say.

Yeah, I don't think that fully automatic weapons should be in the hands of the public.  If you want to own a pistol or shotgun, fine, or even a hunting rifle, I am ok with that.  But there is no reason why you should be able to put 600 rounds a minute down range out of a 30 round magazine.

You know after the Pearl Harbor bombing, there was nothing standing in Japan's way to attack main land United States.

You mean apart from the rest of the U.S. Pacific Fleet, including all of their vaunted aircraft carriers?
The aircraft carriers were supposed to be in Peral Harbor but they weren't.  It seems the real reason why is that Japan lost at Midway Island.

Back to the real thread since people have seemed to have left it. From another website.

From the CDC.gov website:

Heart disease: 599,413
Cancer: 567,628
Chronic lower respiratory diseases: 137,353
Stroke (cerebrovascular diseases): 128,842
Accidents (unintentional injuries): 118,021
Alzheimer's disease: 79,003
Diabetes: 68,705
Influenza and Pneumonia: 53,692
Nephritis, nephrotic syndrome, and nephrosis: 48,935
Intentional self-harm (suicide): 36,909

All homicides

Number of deaths: 16,799
Deaths per 100,000 population: 5.5
Cause of death rank: 15

Firearm homicides

Number of deaths: 11,493
Deaths per 100,000 population: 3.7
The number for firearm homicide present here is more reasonable than the 45,000 claimed earlier in this thread.

Fascinating that obesity-related causes of death are many times more prevalent than firearm-related death. People talk about banning guns when we should probably be talking about banning food.

Lol, Japan would never have invaded mainland America. They never even had plans to invade Australia, and we were just across the ocean from their forces in new guinea, in addition to our limited military capabilities compared to America.

It is more like no one started research on heart disease at all and everyone is solely interested in cancer because Europeans are cancer-pansies.

Yeah.  People are buying it because they're afraid they won't.  Seriously that's the ONLY reason.

"I want a gun because I might not be able to get one next week".  Ridiculous.  But whatever.

Oh and if this is any indication then most guns used in mass killings are legally obtained at one point or another.

Where is the black market?!

If you had good mental health care, clearly kids being shot wouldn't be a worry and thus guns would be legal. Since yourself and everyone you know in your country apparently wouldn't be able to resist the chance to shoot children, none of you can be trusted with any sort of weapon.
