god feeds off thought waves
« on: November 21, 2008, 09:08:56 AM »
i believe that a God does exist, but only because people believe in him. i think that if people stopped thinking about God, then he would dissapear and no longer exist.

is that probable at all or do you think it's ridiculous?

That idea has only been proposed a million times and also been featured in D&D style novels.

So you believe the subconscious mind can create an actual entity?  Does that mean Santa Clause exists but only because billions of children believe in him?
You think that a photograph is indisputable evidence?  Would you like me to show you a photograph of Barack Obama having sex with a gorilla?

God as a concept exists as a concept because the concept is invented by imagination.

As for God as an entity, I am as confident as I can be, that beliefs do not determine reality. More like, reality influences beliefs.
If I was asked to imagine a perfect deity, I would never invent one that suffers from a multiple personality disorder. Christians get points for originality there.

I think he meant more along the lines of, he gets power from us worshiping him, he is a real thing, but if we stopped worshiping him he'd lose his power. Anyone a fan of Morrowind? Basically the same way a spirit or daedra transcends to god.

So, what of placebos?
Beliefs can change body chemistry and behavior... which in turn does affect reality, but on their own they seem meaningless.

To be fair, I should have said, "directly".

I see what you mean.

I played Morrowind long enough to be so bored I fell asleep.   :-\

It's a fun game when you completely say Fuck you to the story line and just go around killing things. I leveled up too much, it got boring when no one could hit me anymore, and I had 100% absorb against magic. So I killed a vivec guard without being seen, then wore the armor. It made it more interesting because every vivec guard from that point on attacks you and you can kill them without getting in trouble. Quick way to get rich.

Wait, I thought they didn't need worshipers to gain power, the ascended ones that guided the ori had just agreed not to interfere on our side of the universe, but they had made no promises about their subjects.

Though now I can't remember why they want worshipers, so you might be right.

They needed the power to wipe out the The Others.

See Terry Pratchett's Hogfather

basically the big TP has this concept explored, expanded, played with and accepted.

Agreed, I got Nation on audiobook the other day to make my 2 hour commutes more interesting and it's a return to the form he lost a bit with 'making money'

I haven't read either, so I don't know about it, unfortunately. Although, one thing that I never understood is, where does Death make his transition from being this malevolent entity he seems to be in The Colour of Magic, to just being an innocent person who just happens to be good at his job, albeit rather bored with it?

In the first book you're seeing him more through Rincewind's eyes.

Really? Well, that would explain his more villainous nature, Rincewind being the coward that he is.

Or he changed to suit the needs of the author, as often happens with characters in a long series.

Could have been another Death perhaps? The Auditors tried to have 'Bill Door' killed and replaced. Perhaps the malevolent death had too much of a personality.
