I'm underage, but I probably wouldn't have voted anyway.

Hmm, I respect much of the Australian political and social system, but I cannot support compulsory voting. It seems to me to be an undue and risky impingement on individual freedom to choose not to vote.
Agreed. Not to mention that people who are uniformed/uninterested shouldn't be forced to cast a ballot. Voting for people by judging their names is a destructive practice.

majority of people ARE interested in the voting.
the ones that are uniformed, uninterested or "stupid" mainly do what is called a 'donkey' vote; deliberatly mess it up by doing it wrong, or adding other names (there has been elmo, yoda, big bird etc lol).
we dont vote by names either, it a party like in america. liberal, labour, greens, national, family first and quite a few others.

i'm still under 18, i dont begin voting til late next year lol.
The best question in the world is: Why?

Majority of people ARE interested in the voting.

Why should they be?
If benefit is greater than cost, they would.
If cost is greater than benefit, they wouldn't.

Cost being time, gasoline to drive to the polls, patience, sleep, et cetera.
Benefit being an infinitesimal sliver of a percentage point in determining the outcome of an election, for an increase in probability that will economically benefit you through the candidate's policies.
(Time, effort, waiting) > (influence of .0000008% of the total outcome).

See 'rational ignorance' for an economic/mathematical perspective on politics.

That aside, our voting history as shown a reliable downward slope of voter participation. Each election, people don't care as much. Of course this trend can be temporarily offset by new implications of the candidates like first black president. Unfortunately, voters react to this kind of thing.

I hadn't considered this possibility. Although, it seems unlikely to me that the majority of people who are only subjected to propaganda, and none of their own unbiased research would still 'donkey' vote. Emotion has a history of overruling logic and people will support candidates while convincing themselves they are informed.

I was trying to use voting by names as an example of messing up the vote. On a side note: A hint of annoyance may be bleeding through into my post because I'm recalling a news story in which an incompetent woman cast a ballot, with the assistance of a dispatch from a committee without being reviewed. By incompetent, I mean she didn't know the candidates, her own son's name, or where she was. She doesn't even know who she voted for. I think statistically, it is more likely she voted for a more recognizable name (John vs. Obama).

we vote for prime ministers every 4 years, i think, but there are usually issues in between major elections that the people have to vote on, whether it's for federal or state government. Next year my state is voting whether to keep or abandon daylight savings; i hope it will be after i turn 18 so i can vote on that issue. i love daylight savings, but the majority of people in my town are just too stupid to understand anything about it. If farmers over east deal fine, i guess farmers here in the west are just too stupid.

The voting booths, or whatever, are set up in an area of your local community, so you don't have to travel far to vote. Because we are a farming area, there are 3 different places to go to: One is at the local school, one south-east of town so farmers (in the middle of a farming area) in that area can go there, and the 3rd one is approx west of town so people living along the highway and around that area can vote there. There are 2 other towns about 20-25km away to the north and south of us, so we are pretty central. You don;t have to travel far to vote, and it will only take 20 mins at the most.

Daylight savings time has no benefit, when you are older and all it does is throw off your schedule to change the hours you are awake, it is fairly pointless.
