Ron Paul sucks.
I can quote peoples.

Aren't you clever.

The gold standard and creationism in schools... nuff said.
The gold standard would prevent the raping of countries on the premise their money is worth less. The value of paper money is one of the greatest accomplishments of western capitalism. Convince another country your money is worth more than theirs, and get their labor for practically nothing, while they have to scrape up huge amounts of money to buy anything of yours.

I'm not disagreeing with you, but I don't think bringing back the gold standard would help any of us.
With the dollar rebounding no. The way it was headed though it might have. Do you know the African nation with the only actually valuable currency still makes only gold coins? Their money never inflates.

Which nation? How small are they? Do they do much importing/exporting?

Couldn't tell you all that. The thing is, banking and everything would still work, and they would use checks when carrying the money would be out of the question. It is just all their money is automatically backed up by gold. If the gold doesn't exist neither does the money.

Not that I am disagreeing with anything relevant, but Gold does change in value over time too.

Yes, but its value increases steadily with inflation. If anything it has gotten more valuable. Unless a large stash of gold is found somewhere, the prices stay fairly high.

Therefore irrelevant, since overall high stability was the point.
...I'm just a little nitpicky today.

It can affect the exports/imports badly if it is runaway

how come, in america, you have the option whether or not to vote? In Australia, if you are over 18, you have to vote.

The way I see it, if you vote because you have to then you're not going to want to.  If you don't want to do something your effort gets cut in half and who you pick is probably shit because you didn't feel like researching.  When you have the choice to vote you get to choose to be part of a (semi) democracy and you actually care about what you're doing when you go.

Yeah, I've got a friend in Australia.  She said they get fined for not showing up to vote.

Yeah, I've got a friend in Australia.  She said they get fined for not showing up to vote.

Originally, it wasn't like that. I think it was in the 1920s, not enough people were voting, so they made it compulsory.

But if the entire country votes, then the government knows the opinions of the entire country. If a person doesn't vote, he/she shouldn't complain about the outcome. I think its a better system.

Yes you get fined for not voting, or you have to have a pretty good excuse for not going; the places are open for more then 12 hours. One excuse i've heard somehow involved dragons and budgies lol.

That silly "because we're a free country" line is stupid....its a really stupid excuse for people's own laziness, selfishness, greed, hate. ego's, anger etc. its a ridculous excuse.

Just because you should do something doesn't mean that you have to.  I'm not a particular fan of the freedom not to vote, but it comes with the territory.  We have to be consistent in protecting the Constitutional freedom to do things that we disagree with as well as the freedom to do things that we agree with.

Yes not doing something is hardly about freedom. I also think abortions should become mandatory in certain situations. If you aren't married, you might not have to get one, but you better have a pretty good excuse.

Hmm, I respect much of the Australian political and social system, but I cannot support compulsory voting. It seems to me to be an undue and risky impingement on individual freedom to choose not to vote.
