I find it amusing when people say its the hottest year in history or something like that since recording temperatures is a pretty damn recent thing.

But we can measure average yearly temperatures from centuries ago indirectly.

Indirectly isn't the same

We can still comment on which was the hottest year in recorded history, except that recorded history goes from a few hundred years to a few hundred thousand years or more.
I'm going to side with the white supremacists.

Unless you were actually there hundreds of thousands years ago, measuring the temperature with your little themometres, then it isn't the same.

Obviously it isn't the same. That doesn't diminish the validity of the measurements.

Does to me.

Then the validity of measuring temperature using thermometers isn't valid either. You aren't measuring the temperature directly, you're measuring the effect it has on some substance, usually the expansion of a liquid, exactly the same way as measurements of temperature from thosuands of years ago are made. Congratulations, you've just invalidated every measurement of temperature, time, mass and arguably length that has ever been made.

I stick with the theory that Global (or Planal) Warming is merely a side effect of comming out of an ice age that has lasted for hundreds of years. It actually makes a lot of sense. And does anyone want to send me a cookie?
I hate myself for coming here

Do you not beleive that the rate of global warming which has been observed over the last 20 years is extreme? Extreme trends (especially over over such a long period) will lead to extreme effects. Possibly even melting of the icewall.

Lordypieman

p.s. I have read in the forum FAQs that the icewalls hold the atmolayer inplace. If this is not correct, then I'd like to know what does.

The hottest year in history was in 1980... proof of Global Warming please Al Gore.

Uh... that is evidence in favour of Global Warming.

I was talking about the idea that man made global warming is a 'new threat' as Al Gore seems to claim.  The fact that the earth is getting warmer is undeniable but the earth goes through cycles so this is to be expected.
Normally when I'm not sure I just cop a feel.

How so?  Are you saying the earth doesn't naturally go through stages of ice ages and then a period of hot years?

So how is it proof of man speeding up global warming?

1980 is very recent. We'd been burning fossil fuels for centuries before 1980. The fact that it has happened to be cooler since then is simply a temporary variation. For the warmest year in history to be within the lifetimes of many people alive today says something about humanity's influence on the average global temperature.
