Thinking of getting Linux
« on: October 17, 2008, 11:21:16 AM »
Which distribution should I get? I only use my desktop for work and browsing the blagblag. I also use it for games, but I'll be dual booting with Windows, and given the complicated shit you have to do to play games on Linux, I'll stick with Vista for that. I just found out you can download and run OSs on USB memory sticks, so I wouldn't fuck up my computer quite so badly if I made a mistake, and I also have to get MS-DOS to flash my Xbox and so on. So, which distribution?

Ah, shit. I can't flash the Xbox, I have the wrong motherboard on my PC, I'll have to get the Blaster. The question still stands, mind you.
No but I'm guess your what? 90? Cause you just so darn mature </sarcasm>

My husband uses Ubuntu....I don't quite remember the name of the version.  :-\  But, I do know that it's good for doing what you mentioned, dual booting with windows.  We also have Windows XP Pro on the same computer.  We rarely use it though.
You think that a photograph is indisputable evidence?  Would you like me to show you a photograph of Barack Obama having sex with a gorilla?

If you're going to be running it on a USB drive as you said, I suggest Fedora (instructions for installing to a USB drive) or Slax.

Bumped because I gave up on the USB drive thing, and now I need to mount an .iso and can't do it. I normally use Daemontools, but I actually need a CD this time, so that won't work. The only programs I can find are Roxio and Nero, both too big to use on my poky hard drive, and too not free for me to afford. Any suggestions?

When I become not lazy. I planned for a mid-October release, but I haven't had much time.

Also, stay away from Gentoo. For a newbie Gentoo is probably the worst distribution you could suggest (not including LFS). I would suggest MEPIS or PCLINUX OS.

Does Linux run windows software?

Not natively, but you can get software called Wine which will do the trick.

Does Linux run windows software?
sometimes it can run simple windows software through wine, however, there is cross platform software that works a lot better. Stuff like firefox (web browser), audacity (sound recorder), vlc (media player), GIMP (like photoshop), and similar.

Ah, shit. I can't flash the Xbox, I have the wrong motherboard on my PC, I'll have to get the Blaster. The question still stands, mind you.

You'll want to make a working setup of Wine.

Quote
f you want to use the latest development/staging version of Wine, please make sure to follow the guide in the Official WineHQ Guide for Ubuntu, basically covering:
    • If you are using a 64-bit Architecture, then enable 32-bit for better compatibility
       sudo dpkg --add-architecture i386
    • Add the Wine Key, Wine Repository & Update Repositories
       sudo mkdir -pm755 /etc/apt/keyrings
       sudo wget -O /etc/apt/keyrings/winehq-archive.key https://dl.winehq.org/wine-builds/winehq.key
We would add the repository like this (lsb_release -sc will automatically fetch the codename):
sudo wget -NP /etc/apt/sources.list.d/ https://dl.winehq.org/wine-builds/ubuntu/dists/$(lsb_release -sc)/winehq-$(lsb_release -sc).sources
sudo apt update
    • Then install the version of Wine you wish to use:
        ◦ Based on Wine Development (Stable) (eg: 4.0)
            sudo apt install --install-recommends winehq-stable
        ◦ Based on Wine Development (Testing Stage) (eg: 4.1)
            sudo apt install --install-recommends wine-devel winehq-devel
        ◦ Based on Wine-Staging (Bleeding Edge) (eg: 4.1.1)
            sudo apt install --install-recommends wine-staging winehq-staging
      Lastly run
       WINEARCH=win32 winecfg
in the terminal to make sure it configures Wine correctly (In that order). You will also need to install winetricks (Another configuration package, really helpful for installing Windows components like .NET Framework and other needed libraries). So after this, please do:
       sudo apt install winetricks
You must do these in order, and you should probably do this before other things. Trying to experiment or try some other version of Wine first will brick the program, as I figured out from numerous attempts trying to install other stuff first. The reason is something annoying called dependency. Basically, Linux will sometimes assume you don't need this or that file, and will fuck you over with installs that break things. So yes, install Wine right away, and make it so it opens things properly.

Ubuntu is okay, once you do that. Linux is kinda infamous for not understanding that people like being able to use Windows programs, they just hate dealing with Windows's forced updates.

Same, I wonder how their linux journey is going too.
As for my Linux journey, it's still going well, Peppermint OS works well and I've customised the look a little as well, pointing a crosshair at a frozen app to forcequit with a keyboard shortcut (Ctrl + Alt + Esc) is super cool, makes me feel powerful.
PS: Avoid removing and replacing drivers willy nilly (even with windows) as it can be tricky to fix (but after I searched the right fix, it wasn't too hard)

I’d say go with Linux Mint or Ubuntu—they’re super easy to get into, especially if you’re new to Linux. I started with Mint because it felt more like Windows, which made the switch less intimidating. You can run either from a USB without installing, so no risk of messing up your setup while you try it out. Since you’re keeping Windows for gaming, you don’t have to worry about figuring out things like Proton or Wine yet. Just give one of those a shot and see which feels better for your workflow.

From what I've heard, proton is designed for games, and wine is for general software. Live USBs are awesome too, keep the USB handy even if you install, coz they have saved the day a few times
