Death Moments
« on: October 02, 2008, 03:45:12 PM »
Hi,

Is there anyone can explain what really happens in the last moment of life? I mean we hear and we see many strange things happening. For example when a man in his last breaths we see him like if he seeing things or talking to other people, and we heard like 10000 of stories? so what's really happening in these moments? any explanations? I always keep thinking about this?  :'(

As the brain shuts down, false sensations and hallucinations are perceived for a very short period usually followed by death. I see no reason why we should jump to the conclusion it has a supernatural cause.
If I was asked to imagine a perfect deity, I would never invent one that suffers from a multiple personality disorder. Christians get points for originality there.

Hmmm it's not that supernatural I just keep thinking what really happens. I saw a movie regarding this and some people really are saying crazy stuffs, i guess many of u saw the same movie.

It's like how to explain dreams >_<

I really want to know an explanation to both.

hmm. I don't really watch too many movies. Last one I watched in theaters was over 2 years ago. Last DVD I watched may have been up to 8 months ago.

I also believe that dreams are given too much credit for having meaning. Sure, subconscious information processed throughout a day are organized and uncovered during REM sleep stages, but some dreams are just dreams. I personally don't believe in anything supernatural including omens.

What do you mean? Do you think that the chemical processes in the brain and a disconnect of neural networks can't produce sensations during a brain malfunction and/or death? We can evoke sensations in a brain by stimulating or disconnecting electrical passages in the brain, as seen on MRI's and described by subjects. Blood loss, shock, etc. all fit with false sensations. The brain is just an organic machine that can break down and crash.

i heared once on some show, that the brain senses when it is near the end of life and conjures up visions and memories and sometimes releases endorphins to dull the pain of dying to comfort the person who is dying. does this mean that we have a soul which is, in some ways, seperate from the rest of our being that our brain is designed to comfort? possibly, the only way to find out is to die ourselves.

I see no reason why a soul would be added to the equation. Anywhere.
It's a purely emotional concept conjured up to separate ourselves from others things, create the feeling of purpose, etc. I bet nobody can even tell me what it is. Stuff like personality is already incorporated into our DNA, environment, brain structure, etc.
Worse yet, a soul is loosely defined as being immaterial and unphysical. How does something nonphysical influence the actions or behaviors of the human body? The soul is its own can of worms.
Someone make a thread, I'm going to bed.

The world you see is just a model constructed by the brain, largelty based on prior experiences. death is an alien concept to every brain so it constructs a faulty model the best it can.

I am so insulted  >:(

Alright, I'll contribute. There was this guy, Australian I think, known as 'the jellyfish man' because he got stung by some jellyfish and had this death experience. Anyways he came round for dinner once, quite a few years ago, and he told us about the whole death experience. He was clinically dead apparently for a little while and he said that he went to Hell. So I guess that would fit in with the hallucinations thing, unless of course Hell exists and he actually went there. He said it was dark and there was screaming...

I remember seeing a show ages ago and it had pilots that were undergoing high-g training (getting strapped into a centrifuge and spun around really fast) and they would often experience the same sensations that are common with near death experiences. Of course they weren't near death so it seems to me that any explanation of the phenomena would have to include these experinces too.

So I guess that would fit in with the hallucinations thing, unless of course Hell exists and he actually went there.

Don't forget the third option: he was telling a tall story.

Death is inevitable so we'll all find out soon enough.  In the meantime how about discussing something less depressing, or, you know, make a contribution to society or something? /rant
