Assuming that this is a conspiracy by the governments of the world, what exactly is their motive for doing this? Why would they need to lie?

If I asked you "Scruffy, why did Lincoln keep a beard?" what would you say?

Probably something like "Well, I don't know."

What if I asked you again tomorrow?
And the next day?
And the day after that?

If I asked you "Scruffy, why did Lincoln keep a beard?" every day for the rest of your life, would you ever be able to give me an answer?

You could give me some guesses - maybe Mrs. Lincoln liked it, or maybe he just didn't like to shave - but you'd never be able to give me a real answer.

Think about that, and then tell my why you guys keep asking the same question over and over. Just because you can't explain why Lincoln kept his beard doesn't mean he didn't have one.

That situation doesn't really apply to this situation.

I'm asking you why you base your view of the world on a theory,
like this one, which doesn't explain the most controversial point.

I know nothing about Lincoln, thats a reason why I don't claim to know anything about him, have any theories about him or ever even think about him.

I don't care about him.

You obviously think about the world as a flat plane, and project this opinion to other people.

They ask you why,
and you bring up Lincoln.

Why On Earth, would every person who knows the truth, choose to convince everyone else, that the world is in fact round, if the opposite is true?

Unimportant, I know the answer to your question!

Okay, the reason why he decided to have a beard was because an 11-year old girl told him to. Otherwise, she wouldn't have voted for him. So he was forced to grow one to get more votes.

As for the original question, no-one knows why they're trying to hide the "truth". If you ask me, I think that's another major weakness of the flat Earth theory.

Scruffy indeed has a point that there would be no reason as to having to keep this secret from the people of the world. There is one that could work, but is highly unlikely. I was having a conversation in one of my college classes a few years back (physics class, if that is at all improtant, but I doubt it) and my friend, who i will call joe, had an interesting idea. He said that the only reason a government would keep anything from the people is because of one of the following things:
1. There is a secret tac that people are paying, so small tha alone it wouldn't matter for years (probably from .00001 of a cent) that is funding a secret army or weapons program.
2. They already have the weapon, and are hiding it from the people.
3. There is a disease coming and they only have enough vaccine to save a few thousand select people, of only the upmost importance to the advancement of the human race (smart, strong, ability to build, etc.).

Having a flat earth is about none of these, so why would the government keep it a secret?

Aliens told the government that if the general population found out the true shape of the earth they would kill off our entire species.

I suppose your next question would be: Why do the aliens care?

Well, I dunno. They're aliens. Maybe they think it's funny.

There you go, guys. A perfectly reasonable motive for the government to hide it from us. Hell, it would be irresponsible of them to tell us the truth; knowing the shape of the earth isn't worth extinction, after all.

How the hell is that at all Reasonable?

Reasonable -
   1. Capable of reasoning; rational: a reasonable person.
   2. Governed by or being in accordance with reason or sound thinking: a reasonable solution to the problem.
   3. Being within the bounds of common sense: arrive home at a reasonable hour.
   4. Not excessive or extreme; fair: reasonable prices.

While your definition is indeed correct, Scruffy, that which is reasonable is highly subjective. That which is reasonable to you may not be to another, and vice versa. Basically, what you're saying is "That's reasonable to you and not to me, and since I'm right by virtue of the fact that I'm me, you're an idiot."

Within Reason, but not pulling it out of your ass.

Plot between Aliens and the goverment to kill the human race if any more humans discovered the truth?

I don't care who you ask, That is in no way reasonable.

Partially because that requires another (more far fetched) motive to explain why Aliens would want to ......

I've lost interest.

One day someone who knew the answer would come along and answer it.

He recieved a letter from an 11 year old girl when he was the Republican nominee for president. She said that she thought more people would vote for him if he grew a beard because his face was so thin.

Scuffy, you're missing the point.  I see Unimportant bantering on your level and really making a fool out of you.

I would suggest being more open minded for starters.  Try thinking for yourself.  Ask yourself why the government may want to do this.  Also, there have been several posts on the subject, and I suggest you read them.  Hopefully we can expect you to bring something interesting to the table instead of forcing us to do everything for you.

I tried, but have not found any reasons for the "government" (whoever this really is) to hide the truth about the earths shape. Since you seem to belong to the FE-believers and this is one of the foundational arguments of the FE model, you must have really strong reasons that support this unbreakable belief in the conspiracy. I am really interested, can you please help me in my urge to understand your point? I do not think that anyone smart as you bases his understanding on something he has no proof for, so what makes you so sure. If the REs only knew that we could get to a complete new level of arguing.[/quote]

I think people are missing the point of the "government conspiracy". The flat earth theory only says there is a conspiracy because if the earth is flat, then the governments must be lying when they say it isn't. Either that or the governments are misinformed by the people doing their research.
A different world cannot be built by indifferent people.

Thank you Penguin for bringing that up.

As for me being a FE-Believer; I have not said I believe either way.  My name is symbolic.  In Goethe's, and similarly Marlowe's, stories of Faust, Mephistopheles was literally the devil's advocate.  As my namesake goes, I also play the role of the devil's advocate.  I rarely get involved in debates because frankly I'm not as "learned" in the sciences as people like Erasmus are and feel that I could not clearly argue my beliefs either way.  What I like to do is get people to ask "Why not" much more than "Why".  It makes for more interesting debates when the other party starts trying to see why it couldn't be this and finds that perhaps it could.

Now as for the conspiracy, I do like to venture a few ideas for it :).  The whole point of a conspiracy is the mystery behind it.  Penguin added some valid insight that sometimes I take for granted when posting about this topic.  The conspiracy's motives are not nearly as important as the existance of the conspiracy itself.  But many, such as even me sometimes, believe that it must be justified with some sort of logic or reason for it to exist properly, lest it be used bluntly to explain things when it of itself isn't really explained (An example would be when there was an influx of hypothesis based on "Dark Matter".  They only "worked" if Dark Matter worked in such a way.  Since we don't really know what all it can do, well, it was thrown in to fill holes in their propositions).

As far as basing my beliefs on things, I try to stay open minded about everything.  I'm one of the more neutral posters on here (if I post!) and only appear to defend the FE because there are more attacks on the FE than the RE.  As I've said before, the shape of Earth is meaningless to me.  We live in the human world which simply co-exists on Earth.  The shape of the human world is much more intriguing to me.  Nonetheless, I do like (well sometimes) the thought that is provoked with some questions.

However I must ask many of you new people (this is not necessarily directed at anyone in specific) to start using the "search" feature on this forum.  If you can't find what you're looking for on the FAQ, try the search forum.  I know there has been tons of discussion on the conspiracy (I've contributed to a few) and many other topics which have been reappearing as of late.

And deadlock, I appreciate your overall composure in your post.
